Depends on the vehicle, depends on the battery chemistry. Depends on the application.

Parking those busses right next to one another was peak stupidity, but bad practice and lack of walls can result in multi vehicle fires of any type, as was demonstrated in Bromsgrove bus depot in March this year.

The french one was definately lithium ,theres not much else thats usuable weight for output but there are a couple of technologies coming mainstream .

Even china is not immune

I would NOT like to have even a small crash in an EV vehical you will roast at the minutest damage to these batteries

It's still very early days for EVs though and while there have been plenty of crashes, there have been relatively few fires.

Most of the risk can be designed out.

ICE vehicles are not immune to fires when they crash and the worst of these was probably the Ford Pinto, which represented a serious fire hazard when struck from the rear, even in low-speed collisions.

That problem was known and it was decided it was cheaper to pay out for any deaths than redesign the cars .You cannot design out damage in a crash unless you put a great deal of protection around the batteries making them inperveable to  puncture but even a short externaly to them can set them off they are all potential fireworks ,yes petrol cars catch fire but the rarely burst into flames for no reason.

Try cutting a ordinary D cell in half ,dont try cutting any lithium battery in half! They are dangerous things and EV batteries are banks of smaller batteries any one of them  can go up if it gets upset and becomes unstable .It gets hot causeing the ones around to become unstable and pop !
