I once had two bass in a large aquarium. Once a month I would put a few hundred live shrimp in the tank. The bass would nail them untill in a few days all that was left was around 20 shrimps. These remaining shrimps lived in the rock piles therefore out of the basses reach. At this point I would start feeding the bass Squid again. The bass would eat most of the squid saveing a small amount. The squid saved by the bass was then taken to the rock pile by the bass. The bass would then wait for a shrimp to come out from the rocks to feed on the squid, then the bass would nail the shrimp. The bass were using the squid as bait for the shrimps.

I need to understand how my bait source acts, in all conditions, if I am to target them.

Other fish are quite smart as well.

 

Wrasse mark out a territory, build a nest out of seaweed amongst the rocks and care for the eggs until they hatch.

This compares pretty favourably with the breeding habits of Mr and Mrs Bass
