my ultimate dream to one day go and fish for marlin

We went with Capt Ron Cowling. His boat "Our Mary" fishes out of Funchal, Madeira.

His website is:-

This trip had a "jackpot" strategy. Ron likes to fish in a way that will bring up the big blue marlin but is less effective for other fish.

So we gave up ideas of white marlin, spearfish or giant stingray

Four days, only one marlin strike. We hired "exclusive" ie the entire boat - that way any strike would be to one of us. Expensive, but if you really want a big blue, that seems the best option.

Eight other Brits in other boats were there for a week, and only got one fish (450 lb I believe) between them.

So if you follow that route, be prepared for blanks. However, if successful, the reward is tremendous.

If, on the other hand, a marlin, any marlin, of any size, is your priority, then I recommend Cabo San Lucas in Western Mexico. (our experience was three days - ten marlin to just under 200)

Plenty of Striped Marlin averaging 100 to 150 there, and you are still in with a slight chance of a giant Pacific Blue or a big Black.
