Cheers Newt, brilliant idea.

The reason I use the fluro is that I use the main line on to a hook, no swivels, weights, trace, knots etc. Live eel on the hook and fingers crossed.

I will use the cammo idea to break up the line for my bottom fishing though.

Cheers

Is it me or what?

hembo, I only use 10lb braid on my 15lb rod!!

I`m about to re-spool 20lb braid for the reel on my 12-20lb rod. `Cos I sometimes hook congers by mistake?

Talk about overkill. Even Davy Holt only uses 130lb braid for the big skate!! 200lbs plus.

Why worry about a decent fight, if you use braid strong enough to pull up the anchor.

Come on lads. Whats the drag setting for?

 Paul.

We don`t use J`s anymore!!

I fish 20lb braid on a 12lb rod with 15lb mono leader - works ok for me although I would never get close to breaking strain of the line.

Try setting up 12lb or 20lb outfits and attaching a spring balance to a solid object and to the end of your line and compress the rod into a full fighting curve - bet your surprised how little force you are applying!!!!!

jabee - with the small diameter braid 'super lines' you really need to match the diameter of the line you normally use so you'll have similar abrasion resistance.

That will give you a b/s that is way above any mono/fluoro/whatever.

My wife has small hands and enjoys fishing with u/l spincast gear. I spool her reels with 10lb powerpro with the 2 lb mono diameter. Works fine except that sometimes when she is hung where I can't get her loose and have to pull for a break, the dang snag comes along or the hook goes straight. The stuff never breaks below 10lbs unless nearly cut thru on something and I really believe that it is more like 20 lb b/s at times. But the way she fishes, abrasion normally isn't an issue.

A quick price comparison on the various braid 'super lines'. US prices but man, they are all over the place and for fairly similar lines. I've included the original Berkley Fireline even though it is way too stiff and to prone to fuzzing for me to ever want to spool up with it. Their newer Fireline XDS sounds more like the other lines.

I'm using 300 yd spools of 30 lb b/s since all of them seem to have that length and strength (except the Fireline XDS which is 35 lb and Ripcord [the Cabelas house brand] which doesn't do 300 yds).

Brand................price per 300 yds 30 lb

Fireline ............$25

Fireline XDS ........$42 (35 lb)

Ripcord .............$50 (600 yds)

Ripcord SI ..........$48 (400 yds)

Ripcord SI+ .........$53 (400 yds)

PowerPro ............$24

Spiderwire Stealth ..$17

cheers everyone plenty of info
