Nanny State

this bit is a bit mystifying

"The government's recent interventions on smoking, access to benefits, junk food, gambling and prostitution reflect a philosophical shift in Whitehall that can be traced back to the turn of the millennium."

gambling and the tough laws that used to govern it have been blown wide open and the prostitutes themselves are rarely arrested (but still breaking the law) rather the punters are hounded .

benefits are unchanged (dont believe a word about tightening things up) smoking has been outlawed at work not so much nanny as sense considering the non smoker and junk food has always been junk food but transfats (the junk) has not been outlawed

the gov say a lot but dont really do much ,more money is spent on failed initiatives than invested in ones that really could make a difference in our lives

Believe NOTHING anyones says or writes unless you witness it yourself and even then your eyes can deceive you

None of this "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" crap it just means i have at least two enemies!

There is only one opinion i listen to ,its mine and its ALWAYS right even when its wrong

Its far easier to curse the darkness than light one candle

Mathew 4:19

Grangers law : anything i say will  turn out the opposite or not happen at all!

Life insurance? you wont enjoy a penny!

"To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves and abhors, is sinful and tyrannical." Thomas Jefferson

OI OI,

I think we can now say were close to if not the top of the league, When banning smoking & removing them from the shelf's come higher than advertising gambling & boozing on T.V.

I dont know anyone who has commited any form of violence domestic or otherwise cos they had a tab, i know quite a few WOMEN & MEN who get beat after the bar shut's & a bad day at the bookies or the bingo.

Where does Britain figure in a league table of nanny states? Well, according to boffins in the prime minister's Strategy Unit in 2004, about two thirds of the way down (see below). Some will argue we have moved rapidly up the league since them.

Some might suggest there's more than a little bit of bias in the compilation of the league table as well, could hardly be described as an independant assessment. We all know you can make statistics say whatever you want them to by carefully selecting the datasets.

Democracy is destroying it’s self in the name of the ‘public’ good.

In every area of life the government seeks to control the masses, those that oppose this action are then pilloried by those in power who quote they have a mandate from the elected.

The government has, over the last 10 or so years, turned George Orwell from author to prophet.

Depends how you classify a Nanny State, if your saying a controlled enviroment then I would suggest one looks at the Middle East as a good starting point.

As a born and bred Saudi you still have to have your Iqama to travel within KSA, that is just one example of the restrictions there. It is not so much PC as religiously correct, they don't worry to much about H/S. So you end up with lots of persoal restrictions but no one worried about your general welfare, which to my mind puts the UK in a fairly good position.

France has a 'Nanny State', what we have in the UK is much more insidious.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.
