Hi All

I was wondering has any one used a dry fly to catch carp of the surface ?

I was thinking of trying it out on a local carp pastie water using a carp rod and controller. I have an old trout fly rod, but it may look a bit out of place on a small commercial water + with my fly casting it could be dangerous on a busy water :)

Was thinking that if I hooked a maggot on to the fly it may give it a bit of movement and make it look more like a real insect.

Why not use trad fly tackle?

as for fly choice, id probably go for something like a hopper or a daddy or something similar.
A bird in the bush is worth two in the hand

Have never been able to understand why people fish a mixer on fly tackle or put a maggot on a fly.As allready mentioned it seems to defeat the point a bit.

I have caught many carp on fly tackle using small nymph and emerger patterns on the surface or in the surface film.Great fun and very effective.
And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Thanks for the link Peter M. Very interesting and looks like it could be a lot of fun. They recommend a 9WT rod. My old fly rod is a 7 but should be strong enough for pastie fishing so think I will take Chris's advise and try the fly rod.

Ferret1959, What materials would you recommend to tie a dog biscuit fly ? :) :) :)

i have some flies provided by a poster on here, if you search for carp on fly you should be able to find it, they are excellent.

i also use them as indicator flies when fishing a few buzzers.

i fish baby dolls instead of maggots and feed maggots with a catapult, this has resulted in my largest roach and rudd.

Hi Phil

I can see how a baby dolls with pulted maggots would work. I have a few in my fly box. My local commercial water has plenty of rudd. It could be great sport on a fly rod.
