Spent a very pleasant 30 minutes sussing out new camping and fishing pools in the NT semi desert.. Well...almost semi desert..

A very clever piece of work.

I use Google Earth for same thing Bob.

There is also Google Sky and Google Mars.

https://www.google.com/sky/

http://www.google.co.uk/mars/

Be careful though Bob, there are a few posters in these forums who don't like Google or those who use Google products.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Can that be translated into, 'don't know how to use it'?

Theres some great maps out there ,one site lets you have a modern map one side of your screen and an older one on the other ,the mouse pointer sits on the same spot on both ,a strange grassy bit on the heath was actually a pond a 100 years ago .

http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/sidebyside.cfm#zoom=15&lat=51.1059&lon=0.4708&layers=10&right=BingHyb

Then theres this government map not good on a small screen but ok on a big one

http://www.magic.gov.uk/MagicMap.aspx

Theres also lidar maps now which show stuff long gone

Not easy to use unfortunately

this one has historical finds data not precise luckily or unluckily

http://www.exploringsurreyspast.org.uk/map/

And one or two here

http://www.maphistory.info/imagebi.html#eng

When my mum was a wee girl this was a dam for a water mill for a textile printing company. Nowadays its a filling station.

So in reality all thats changed is the liquid one supplied water to a mill the other petrol to cars ,less swans i would guess though

If you use my side by side map you can pinpoint houses in the past that still exist

No no swans mate. You would not have an inkling of the industry that was there in the past from what can be seen there now.
