Made clotted cream last night

Clotted cream is an expensive treat but double cream is often cheap as chips. Last night I brought some double cream, I whipped some but the rest went in the oven on the lowest setting for five hours in a shallow dish and was then allowed to cool.

Scones, jam and home made clotted cream along with a glass of homebrew cider was a very fine way to watch the sun go down.

Where do you live 1947?

I got driven indoors by my bug zapper making so much noise ,i expect the neighbours thought there was a thunderstorm in my garden

Ps i did have cider (magners but only 48p a bottle) and some scones but i just eat them out of the packet none of this high falluting cutting and filling with stuff 50p a box at poundland

Been some beer reductions at sainsbury last week ,i like cheap bought some nasty bitter as well as lots of magners ,the bitter is crap but at £1.71 for 4 bought two saturday and the last one yesterday along with some lager at 39p a tin,if its cheap its ok but i wouldnt pay full price for any of it ,i would never pay full price for anything i regarded as a treat if its reduced i grab it if i cant use it i will pass it on

I think I'd have gone without - the thought of having the oven on for five hours in this hot weather is enough to put me off.

Probably 15 quid in gas as well lol

I didnt know they stayed lit that long about an hour is the longest i have used one for ,chicken will go in our rottisery (sp?) If its longer than an hour our oven is old and takes an age to get hot so we rarely use it as i cant be bothered waiting until it gets to the correct temperature before chucking stuff in it

Got a forman grill as well but the initial exitement long gone and its rarely used ,collects dust in the garden box we store kitchen gear in because our kitchen is so small.

Finally chucked out the frickin icecream maker ,used every recipe in the book (at great cost) and even thawed out a tub of icecream and tried bringing it back to life with it but every time it came out crap so it went in the bin in small pieces except the bowl because it has a use as a bowl that you can freeze and fill with ice and water to stop blanched veg cooking on

You can make clotted cream in a slow cooker which may save on heating a huge oven

I'd already used the oven so it was hot to start with when I started my experiment. Having it on the lowest setting which wasn't hot enough to cause the cream to boil over wasn't a problem because every window in the house was wide open and there was only enough energy going in to maintain the temperature - a bit like running a lightbulb.

Unfortunately, the only home made jam I have in the house at the moment id chili jam but there's no reason why I shouldn't do a proper job next time and sit down to home made scones, jam and cream along with the homebrew cider - which works out at about 60p a litre and is much better than Mangers.

I used to home brew but this place is to small ,could use the shed but then theres the room in there as well got 3 but all full

I once had a 1878? Formulary and made some cracking stuff ,real ginger beer and a whole host of weird stuff ,some great drink recipies but some ingrediants now illegal or hard to find .

The cider was from scratch but i have used kits which are ok but not as good as old fashioned apples we used to get in a long overgrown orchard ,you need a bit of bitterness in cider some stuff tastes like theve used apple flavour and sweetener's

every window in the house was wide open

Mine are all kept closed and the curtains drawn closed too in hot weather, it really does keep the place a whole lot cooler.

I give it an airing early morning, but after that I shut up shop until it cools down in the evening.

Opening windows lets the heat in it doesnt have any effect on cooling it .

Even a fan doesnt cool air it minutely warms it

Windows closed curtains shut on the sunny side ,open on the cool side until the outside air is the same temp as inside air then shut .

Johnie foreigner has learn to stop sun getting into room with shutters on outside ,even drawing curtains makes rooms warmer but less so than letting sun in.

A chap that flits about the hot regions would know this but i guess the oven/cream factor makes a difference lol

Outside temp 32.3 inside 23.5 no windows or curtains open ,i will switch on mobile aircon at 3 when the side of the house is exposed it heats up like a firebrick and heats the room up next to it despite sealing the room vents ,the aicon wont cool the bedroom but will keep it at about 23 so i can sleep having a window open to let cool air in wont do a thing unless theres a gale blowing it through the house

I heard the mrs shutting bedroom window at 5.30 am mumbling its cold (a freezing 17 degrees!) Surprised she didnt put tge fricking heating on!

My cider is made from supermarket apple juice with tannin and malic acid added to make up the difference between desert apple and proper cider apples. Results aren't quite on a par with real cider made from apples but they're much better than kits and you can do it at any time f the year.

Strange you should mention ginger beer. I've just had one of those with lunch - home made of course.
