  1. Yeah I was thinking the same thing Marc, looked a bit dodgy that to me really should have gone back Glenn, it's not really on killing these small bass {admin note: see my comment on the previous topic. Unless you have better grounds than a photo that looks like a very legal fish, this accusation strikes me as being in very poor taste unless you are having a go at a friend which is not the case here. Newt}
  2. The restriction is there purely for safety reasons by keeping all the kayakers within a certain area that can be easily viewed by each other and the safety boat - the match is under the banner of the Scarborough Angling Festival that is in it's 97th year - it is the first dedicated kayak match that I know of in the north so it is important that all safety aspects have been covered We have decided to make the match a heaviest fish match - thus so making it an extremely fair match where the winner may catch the deciding fish in the first or last minute - it also gives all a reasonable chance of getting to the prize table, not just local anglers - the species targeted will be cod that are numerous along this coast and are found very close in, distance will have no bearing on this match, in fact as soon as you get out of the land rock the fishing is barren - last year a local shore angler took a 15lb cod from where the match is taking place, so that's the quality of fish at stake, there are many fish in the 6-8lb stamp at that time of year There is a substantial prize table here not just a raffle table - Ocean Kayak are donating a new kayak, there will be good tackle, and plenty of cash prizes starting at at least 100 pounds, possibly the first 15 anglers will get something This match will be fair to all taking part and I think the first prize of a new kayak shows the commitment of Ocean Kayak and all to make it a successful event - I am sure it will also be a very enjoyable day out
  3. A very thorough report - I wish manufacturers would stop producing better and better kayaks - cause I want one and I'm skint
  4. I bought a T100 last year when I started kayaking but soon became aware of it's limitations - I was cod fishing in the north sea off Scarborough - I soon upgraded to a Prowler 15 that had much more storage and performed in the sea much better - however I still have the T100 and feel a certain level of attachment too it as it was my first kayak and we share many captures and it brought me into such a great hobby - like for mentioned I take the T100 out into the gullies and plug and spin etc when I don't need lots of kit which proves ideal - but you have to accept the limitations, so beware that you might end up upgrading sooner rather than later
  5. good reply- I think its just a case of reducing or eliminating the risks as far as possible - the more saftey features the better - who knows how anyone will react when it goes t*** up
  6. A tragic loss, i wonder what clothing they had on
  7. had a an afternoon on friday under bempton cliffs (350 foot) with the tarpon 100 - the mist was cloaking the cliffs making an immpressive scene - the sea was like glass, lazy. Fished with crab and mussel only 300 yards or so off and managed 5 codling at the 2 to 3 lb bracket, not massive but at this time of year ok - waiting really for the sea to clear up when the jiggers and shads will come out of retirement cheers space monkey
  8. Hi musket, i'm looking at a fladden maxximus, what rating is yours? I dont know wether to get 12/20 or 20/30, it has to jig 3 and 4 oz jigs - any light shed would be appteciated - cheers monkey
  9. many thanks gb for info, think I get the idea - been thinking about putting weak link higher up say 2 metres, as its breaking because of rubbing on the rock - i'm sure this will help - cheers space monkey
  10. I could do with a bit of expert advice from you lads regarding anchors, I fish on rock and therefore the method of holding is by snagging and snagging only - approx 40-50 foot of water in average tide conditions. I've made an anchor of about 1 pound with 4 "bendable" prongs, which also incorperates a weak trip. However I only used it once as it was a bitch to pull out and in a strong wind creating a rapid drift it was very un-nerving, if I went with thinner wire I doubt it would hold - I therefore devised a "throwaway" method; basically 3 5 inch nails bent to make 3 prongs, this was tied to a short length of 50lb line, with added weight of a piece of any scrap metal this would hold, but it would break after a while - all in all its trying to find a compromise between holding and safety as you can not put as much pressure on the anchor rope in a yak as you would with boat - any ideas would be greatly apprieciated. cheers space monkey
  11. glad you got out lads and had a good day, the yorkshire lads know a thing or two about wind forecasts also!
  12. nice report lads, enjoyed reading and looking at pics - it looked a fine day
  13. Lets hope those big cod are visiting Cayton this weekend Vol!!
  14. Hey guys, doing a night shift Sat night so might be a bit zonked, will endevour to be at car park at 12, but might be a bit late, so if you see a yak heading towards you don't shoot its me!! - if you can try and bring some mussels - lets hope the weather is kind. look foward to seeing you all space monkey
  15. god I thought the great John Peel was dead, well Simon let me explain, music's sensual and the senses are not governed by time, and like food, drink and women they like a varied blend. No- one champions the down trodden working man like cash, as a modern comparison, Elvis would be robbie williams, Cash would be a pete docherty (now theres a class album "the libertines") - "early one morning my making the rounds, I took a shot of cocaine and shot my woman down", you could mistake that as a modern rant by a jewlry infested rapper. Dark side of the moon - an existential masterpiece Song remains the same - Zeppelin are the rock group that all others aspire to, had to pick a live one as I couldn't put them all in. The stone rose - this band dragged british music out of the dead 80's, influencing oasis, supergrass, pulp and many more, this album is timeless OK Computer - an album that brutally exposes our bleak modern day lives, an expression of contemporary age angst driven out by aggressive electric guitar drifts Yes Meatloaf are good, but there reputation is built on that one testostrone fueled track, "yak out of Solent", oh no sorry "bat out of hell" As for "marching on together", well what can I say But with all this said, you are right Simon I am mixed up - forgot to mention Cash loved fishing
  16. hey guys, caytons on my patch, would like to link up if poss, can't meet on the 13th or 20th due to work, but could do the sundays of them weekends? failing that anyone got any free week days i might be free although the weather has been a bummer recentley. cheers space monkey
  17. oh forgot best single "marching on together" - leeds united
  18. jonny cash - jonny cash at folsom prison pink floyd - dark side of the moom radiohead - ok computer led zeppelin - the song remains the same stone rose - the stone roses no order, 5 is a very small list, although when yakin a like the theme from jaws.
  19. I ultimatley agree with you hursty, and everyone else firing at SA, I could rant on for ages about how that mag has gone downhill in recent years, the paradox is that they are willing to accept money from kayak producers (hobie for one), however my wallet does the talking - I have fished passionatley all my life from river, shore and boat, but the thrill of discovering yak fishing this year was overwhelming - there is no doubt that there will be an explosion of sea kayakers in 2007 - but here lies the problem for sea angler -I like many have been self taught, learning as i went along, I would be foolish to ignore the twitching of the anal nerve when i first put my yak in a tide, and when the unforecast sea breeze whipped up a choppy sea within minutes - now after 6 months expierence the old nerve twitches less and less, and i just love being out there, with all the safety aspects taken care of - there are so many conflicting ideas on safety issues, for instance correct clothing, that i feel there should be some official code that newcomers could refer to - i am sure sea angler are aware of the sports popularity and the influx that is happening which they can not ignore for long -with more yakkers entering the sport i feel there will be a serious accident sooner or later, and sea angler dont want to be assoicated with it - it is clear some sort of dialogue is the responsible way forward.
  20. I dont think its fair having a personal go at anyone, how can anyone really comment on the proffesional abilities of mel russ, he's run the most successful sea mag for years? - if you don't like it just dont buy it - of course everyone has views and opinions on kayak fishing, he is concerned with safety which is a sensible issue and one to which he must feel responsible to his readers, hardly the thoughts of a "pratt" - it makes no difference to my yak fishing wether or not the sport is covered in "FHM" or sea angler - anyway merryxmas to all
  21. get yourself to thialand phooey, you can then export that "super pheromone bait" to the uk - and get yourself on the gravy train
  22. What fish do you get at Mappleton? Had a look at comp site and i'll be interested at that if i'm not working, does a seal count as most unusual fish? - hi nemo/nicepix - will post when i'm going so keep looking, hopefully we could meet up - simon, yes north yorks coast is diverse in scenery, and yes there are some spectacular cliffs, i fish under bempton cliffs which are 350 foot high and are stunning on the eye, although its mainly cod fishing there are more bass turning up each year probably an effect of sea temps rising - i would be more than willing to show you some spots where the cod are obliging although i think it would be best to wait until june 07 - on you light tackle theme (fly) i don't think you could but who knows, the water in summer is clear enough, but most fish come in the 30-50 foot zone, i am always thinking of how to improve the scrap and for next year i'm going to scale down my tackle when i can, ramming a good cod on a 2oz jig and 12lb class rod should be fun - anyway let me know and i'll show you around see you all space monkey
  23. yes volusian I remember you 2 - so you took the plunge? well done - how you been doing? are you handling the fishing yaks ok? are you nailing the cod? have the seals accepted you? its a good spot gristhorpe, plenty of areas, use your sonar to find gullies and run offs, the bottom changes rapidly, have a mooch around "old horse" (the single rock exposed 4down at the filey end of bay) - anyway hopefully we can meet up some time? - nicepix - wouldn't mind having a go at the fly and was thinking about it, i have a small fly rod, although this would be a summer method - i have spare tackle for cod fishing winter and summer which you could use, although for the winter you really need an anchor system - i think you'll enjoy the summer codding around our patch, hitting cod hard jigging on braid in shallow water gives you a nice rush of adrenalian - have you hit any bass around flamborough on the fly? have you tried reighton for bass on the fly? see you space monkey
  24. firstly a warm welcome to all as i'm a freshman to this site!! - been looking at the post from volusian - now then mate, i've been yak fishing all summer around your patch as i live in the holbeck area of scarborough - i fish cornelian (to the left of cayton) and gristhorpe (to the right of cayton) lauching from holbeck, cornelian and cayton, i have got to know the area quite well and have had some good cod catches (top a 14lber) would love to meet up with any of you guys and share info and fish - i fish as often as i can but the weather recently has made it difficult - anyway let me know if anyone's interested see ya space monkey
