  1. What chesters1 says is a pretty accurate depiction of how most in the western world feel, with some justification. The Governments of the countries "suffering" are to blame for extinct animals and diminishing habitats, not us.
  2. I think the position he has got could be described as, "no position at all".
  3. Are you sure ? If its this appointment, http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2011/ap...imf-consolation is not quite the same thing.
  4. Kissing frogs looking for a Prince involves a lot of disappointments, wasted time and money. Whats wrong with asking other anglers for recommendations, I do it all the time ?
  5. "Racist abuse" is really just abuse. If someone wants to abuse you they need a handle for the abuse, it can be "fat", "old", "skinny", "tall, "short", etc. If you are coloured, its logical that it becomes, " white", "black", yellow, etc. With foreigners its often, "French", "German", "Italian", etc., or slang versions like, "Yank", "Kraut", "Jap", etc. Its just abuse and should be as offensive if you are fat, skinny, French or German, as it is if you are black. I was watching one of the UK cops programmes a few weeks ago and some young coloured lad had been beaten up. The policemen were not that bothered until one asked if the attackers had racially abused him, when he said they had called him a "black *******" , the police suddenly got really interested and when calling out the cavalry reported it back to HQ as, "a racially motivated assault". I wonder what would have happened if it had been a fat kid involved and he had told the police that his attackers called him a "fat *******". Would the cavalry then have been summoned, I doubt it.
  6. Quite an emotive subject for many. I have taken pike in the UK between 3 and 5 pounds, they taste very nice. However, that was all about 30 years ago and I have no great desire to do that nowadays. I did eat pike in Romania once that was the centrepiece of a meal and I would estimate the fish as weighing about 25 pounds. It was so smothered in sauces I couldn't tell if it tasted "woolly" or not, but the texture was definitely "woolly".
  7. Well, after reading that lot, I won't be buying a car transporter trailer from Chris Goddard any time soon.
  8. I downloaded version 4 and the "reload current page" and "go back one page/go forward one page" facilities didn't work. It also declared most of my Add Ons as being incompatible and disabled them. I love Firefox as a browser and have gone back to version 3.5.18, but it is annoying that , apart from an unofficial Forum, there is almost no chance of getting a comment from Firefox regarding any problems.
  9. The Channel side of the County is best IMO. The beaches at Sandgate and Hythe can be good and are comfortable (easy parking, short walk, not usually crowded). Dungeness and Dengemarsh can be very good at times, but much longer walk and it can get busy. Deal Pier and The Admiralty at Dover are good venues, as is Samphire Hoe, drop net needed at these locations and Samphire is quite snaggy. There is a whole area here to explore.
  10. As I hadn't heard anything about this for quite a while,I assumed it had been quietly dropped and the SSFC had crawled back under their stone. The fact that its still proceeding is incredible.
  11. In my case its a "concentration span" thing, cricket is too slow and laborious and takes too long to reach any conclusion (sometimes days). Yet, I can sit all day fishing, shooting, or reading a book, without losing concentration at all, but then I am involved and not just a spectator. Perhaps I was a butterfly in a former life.
  12. I am one of the many glad to see the back of Andy (my opinion is the only one that counts) Gray, he was well past his sell-by date. Its also good to see his little puppy Keys going to. With regard to footballers wages, I consider them entertainers and their earnings don't seem to be that much out of line with popstars, actors and the like. Its good we all have different tastes, I like most sports, but wouldn't cross the road to watch a game of cricket.
  13. I think before you get too involved in birth signs and the like, have a good look at the self proclaimed Astrologers. It made me not want to believe in anything that they did.
  14. Cranfield

    R.I.P. Ada

I never met him, but he was always worth a read and seemed a nice bloke. Condolences to his family and friends.
  15. I am not advocating "kill all", I am advocating "control". The cormorant is basically a sea bird and was once vary rarely seen inland. The dwindling fish stocks around our coasts and estuaries have been blamed for them moving on to freshwaters, but I do not consider them a "natural" predator of freshwater fish.
  16. I believe that something has to be done to control the cormorants feeding in freshwater. Its not just the commercial fisheries that suffer, most of our rivers and streams are being denuded by the uncontrolled predation.
  17. Given the choice of watching a soap, or cricket, or having a tooth out, I would gladly walk to the Dentists. Is this the definition of a true outcast ?
  18. I saw him once at a Carp Show in the Midlands, at the time he had the most gorgeous girlfriend, I think her name was similar to his, Julie or Jules She was much more interesting than he was.
  19. I also don't want to chew this bone just for the sake of it, but "assumptions", in the absence of hard facts, is all you have. There are no hard facts of the amount of fish caught by commercials, because catch returns don't include discards and many netters come under the radar for catch returns. Apart from reading catch reports on Internet Forums, there are no hard facts on the catches by RSA. However, I believe that on the balance of probability, a net will catch more than a rod and line (standard 2 hook rig) , in the same place, over the same period, in the same conditions. I would also speculate that a ban on netting would have a greater affect on increasing fish stocks than a ban on conventional road and line fishing would. So I still believe that any form of commercial net fishing takes more fish than the RSA with rod and line. On which point I am happy to agree to disagree with you.
  20. Probably all of those things, plus watching a few Trawlermen episodes. I doubt there are any statistics that could prove either side of the discussion, but there are just things that don't sound right. Eight blokes in a charter boat fishing 6-8 hours just couldn't catch as much as a trawler fishing for the same amount of time. If you then include the general poor quality of beach fishing in the UK (which the majority of the RSA are involved in) keeping catches even lower, the beachfishing RSA surely can't keep up with the inshore netters.
  21. I went to an Osteopath some years ago with lower back pain and experienced the, "deep tissue manipulation and explosive movements of joints" that Sportsman refers to. In this case I was rolled into the foetal position and he cracked my spine. If anything I felt worse after the treatment. Two years later I had a discectomy on two discs and the Orthapaedic Surgeon said that although I had osteo arthritis, there was "trauma damage" to the lower spinal discs. He asked if I had ever had manipulation to my lower spine. I told him about the Osteopath visit and he expressed the opinion that such charlatans should never be allowed to touch human beings, but he said it in less flowery language.
  22. I find it hard to believe that anyone can disagree with that statement. Surely the commercial net fishermen outfish the recreational tonnage of any specie over any period, a week, a month, a year. I can't think of any specie that could be caught in greater numbers on rod and line , than in a net. Net fishing is also inclusive, in that it produces bycatch and undersized fish, at least the RSA would release such fish that would have some chance of surviving.
