  1. I think the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford has a largish pike wiht the also quite decent sized pike that choked it to death...both stuffed together, the smaller down the other's throat! I seem to remember it's also got a coelacanth too!
  2. I was once strumming a guitar and singing by the side of a lake and a load of carp threw themselves out of the water onto the bank, which is odd since all the people with me threw themselves into the lake, as did a blackbird and a couple of slugs.

    ActiveX

Of course you might prefer to keep your prompt relating to ActiveX for security reasons...downloading some malicious ActiveX could be upsetting! There are loads of places with info about thix...this one's old but gives the gist of it.. http://www.cs.princeton.edu/sip/faq/java-v...vs-activex.html
  4. Really? How much? I have one Got it as a school prize...I was able to choose what I got (so long as it was book). I think I was supposed to ask for something like Poems of Horace (original Latin version) so probably raised a few eyebrows. The year before or after I asked for Clifford & Arbery's Redmire Pool...now there's a book I read to death... Unfortunately I have no time to read anything fishy at the moment...I think the last one I did read was Rev someone or other's Season on the Test from about 100 years ago. There's also some writer I discovered a year or two ago who wrote (if I remember correctly) in the 60s/70s, was a journalist I think, tended to write very unpretentiously and amusingly/wryly about just going fishing, not about catching big fish etc. Really entertaining stuff - the sort of thing to remind you why you go fishing - but it's driving me mad because I can't remember his name! If anyone can suggest a name that might fit my minimal description it might ring a bell and put me out of my misery..
  5. Humbug...they had sold out when I ordered it... Have to make do with a library copy again (can't afford 90 quid)

  7. Er..were you trolling from the car? I usually manage to catch nothing without hardly travelling at all, which must mean I'm doing something right...
  8. I've decided not to like you til I get over that!
  9. Yes, but the poor souls are only allowed to fish at the worst times of day, can't choose where to fish, have to fish in a crowd, have to start fishing when told to, have to stop fishing when told to, have to lug around more tackle than an elephant could manage, judge their day's fishing by comparing their catches with someone else's, have to pay through the nose for all this, AND have to buy a keepnet. Each to their own but it's not my idea of a good time.

    I don't have a gynaecologist!
  12. No need to reply to this one... My old man wanted me to pass on his thanks to those who offered advice about worms and barbless hooks last month. Special thx to Alan: he was particularly interested in the Enterprise tackle worm stops you pointed him to. Anyway, I just got a message that his first trip back at the barbless hook place armed with Angler's Net feedback and a tub of worms resulted in an 8-11 tench, so it seems that your help has paid off! Thanks again..
  13. Further to Bruno's comments... http://web.tiscali.it/sv2001/cormo_receipts.htm Mmmm...
  14. These 'Ethnic Minorities' weren't Scots were they? I read that in the lead up to one of the England games (probably Denmark) sales of beer imported from the opposition went down in England, but UP in Scotland! I missed the story about the man being prosecuted for flying the George Cross..does anyone have a link to it? Would like to know more.
  15. I am currently without car following a curious set of incidents that resulted in the police nabbing about half a dozen tea leafs all at once. One bunch stole my car and took it joyriding up some street in Cambridge and in doing so attracted the attention of a passing police car who followed them for a while before another (unconnected) stolen car shot out of a side road and broadsided mine. One driver knocked unconscious and off to hospital, everybody else off to the cells, and my car the shape of a squashed banana. Has seriously buggered my fishing plans these few months but last I heard the whole crowd were in Crown Court, in line for a custodial sentence. So I'm on my bike for a bit but at least the lot who nicked it might be out of action too.
  16. Well here's a curious one to keep the conversation going (from the Times): The Rev Michael Daggett, 54, was jailed for four months by Salford magistrates for keeping a loaded antique gun in a grandfather clock at The Church of the Holy Rood in Swinton, near Manchester. He said that it was for protection. What do you make of that considering the topic of this thread? Wonder if he got the gun before or after Strang's release?
  17. Apparently Eden Strang has only been let out on the condition that he never, ever watches Pulp Fiction, so I think we can rest easy.

    big Perch

With regard to coloured water, I've fished in (freshwater) tropical Australia where the water was the colour of mud. You couldn't see into it at all(which is a bit alarming considering some of the nasties that lurk within). Nevertheless the main method used appears to be lure fishing (tho they also regularly use live fish baits and yabbies, which are a sort of crayfish) AND they seem to attribute preferences for lure colour to the fish: when I was there one pastelly pink and light blue lure that looked decidedly camp and was known consequently as an Elton (!) was in favour. The main target is Barramundi, which are some form of perch (at least I think they are) though with a highly reflective eye like that of the zander, which must go some way to explaining this. They catch other fish on lures, though, including catfish (which they hate), in these conditions. As for perch here, I can't come close to the experience of someone like Steve, but all my bigger ones (2lb+) have come to lures (mainly cos I don't fish much else for them) and almost all of these to lures of 3 or more inches long, often much bigger. Finally (yes sorry going on a bit here), glad to hear Wonder Wire is still available since it's all I've used for several years and it's great stuff and I'm running out. cheers
