  1. Hi and thanks, btw I matchfished a bit, so know how to use them lol. Just being away for several years, I don't know where to find the good ones anymore, none of my locals don't have much choice thanks PS, I know what you mean Seph, but you can cover most situations with the right ones, it's just finding em these days thats the problem Good post David t
  2. Hi, lets say you lost all your Stick floats somehow and wanted to get a new set to replace them, what would you look for ? and where ?, say for instance for rivers like the Trent and Yorkshire rivers and not for fishing rapids & fast water, I know it's had to say a good general purpose set, or even two sets, but I'm sure you know what I mean. I actually fish mainly in Yorkshire really. So I'm looking for ideas as to what to look for, present for my son and maybe I'll treat myself to a few too thank guys cya
  3. Hi, Yes SpenBeck, where you said "D Ks" posted the pic on another yorkshire website
  4. HI, At last I got my first barbel, first chuck-in yesterday on the Nidd, 8lb 6oz not a bad start to barbel fishing. Boy did it pull a bit cya
  5. Hi, yes thats right "Winfield", I remember that too at woolies, long time ago mate lol cya
  6. personally the "wifes purse" idea gets my vote lol cya
  7. Hi, thanks for that SpenBeck , I might even know you or know your name. I'm from the same area, fished with Spen many years ago 80s. maybe another surprise, like I bumped into a guy I went to Ireland with on a fishing hol from the spen club 25yrs ago. I was just out checking the form on the calder on sun, saw a few good anglers too cya PS thanks for the advice
  8. Hi,"Every few years" was a example, I never ever needed to change more than once a year in 30yrs fishing, never got any breaks from bad line in all that time either. I change as and when needed, from experience. If your a heavy user who fished a lot and looses plenty of line, you might well need a change twice a year. but line these days is not too bad, lasts a while too. (treat it well and it lasts) Like you say, no point filling a reel with 500yds of new stuff, 400 off any old line will do as backing, unless your a clever guy who casts 200yds . cya
  9. Hi, thanks gozzer, yes it's Bradford No1, useful info, appreciated, the dog kennels was the area I was thinking of trying,, want to break my barble duck, it's practically the only one I've never caught in course fish. cya
  10. Hi, Never fished Cowthorpe yet... Intent to in the comming weeks when the temp cools off a bit. Barbel are the target, not a fish I've targeted before, been and had a look at the river, now to think of the best way to tackle it. ?? I'm told if I want Chub & Barble, it's stick float & caster, or halibut pellets on the bomb for the bigger barble !! Anyone anything useful to add to this advice.....??? PS, not fishing light with match tactics either thanks in advance Rob PS, what would you say a good barbel swim should have ? other than fish [wink]
  11. Hi, I always forget the right way to take line off a new spool to wind onto reel, must be age lol, at least it's only a job I do every few years (replacing all the line)
  12. Hi, I often think it's only a matter of time before the government syphon off some of the licence fee's for their own use on things nothing to do with the environment / angling . cya Rob
  13. Hi guys, it seems to be getting OFF the Topic of commercial or River and turning into a general chat on where to fish (sorry)
  14. Hi, For me the most pleasure in fishing IS getting down on the river, where ever that maybe. Never fished a commercial water in my life (48), had a go with the matchfishing when I was younger in the late 70s & 80s, which was always fun, met some nice guys, but the appeal of say "a fish a chuck" on some overstocked commercial never did seem like it would be a pleasure to me, (I'd rather have a blank on a river anyday), I've always avoided commercials, will do my best to carry-on doing the same. As far as stillwater v rivers goes, I can actually have a good day on a river and catch little or nothing & enjoy it, but not the same on stillwaters, I just love fishing rivers even if I'm only catching 2-4oz roach, I've also had some good days on lakes (not commercial) & canals too, but the appeal of rivers will always be No 1 for me. The thrill of catching a fish in a longtime fishless/poluted stretch of river is something I never forget, seeing the same improve over the years is nice too, Calder in W, Yorks, lower stretches being one close to home. cya
  15. Hi, It happens to the best, don't worry about it, be positive, you might have learned something, everyone gets blanks at sometime. After I've had one, I always try to think what I could have done better to improve my chances, so try to look on the bright side. cya
  16. Hi, Yes Glycerine is the right stuff to use, I used to use it years ago when fishing winter league matches in Dec,Jan & Feb and I never had any troubles with ice in the rings. These days I don't have trouble with ice either, because I've gotten soft with age, no more winter fishing in freezing cold weather, it was a hell of a job keeping warm in those days in the 80s. But I had a few good days. cya
  17. Hi, Now back to the starter topic of Matt or JW, I think JW get's the vote from me, because of all he has done over a period of time. Matt is the future and also doing a great job, I like both of them, different styles. I've been an angler on & off for 35yrs, so I've seen a bit. cya
  18. Hi, maybe a couple of our Yorkshire rivers hold more roach than ever before ? Calder & Aire, but this is probably due to the improvements in the water quality over the years. I know for a fact that there are more roach in the calder on the whole than ever before, whole stretches or river are now fishable than ever before, roach probably in the whole of the lower reaches now, when they where not there say 10yrs ago, great sport & getting better, though the calder has a history of bad news, just when things are looking better (fingers crossed). The environment agency have done a lot to make welcome improvements in the water quality. cya
  19. Hi, now that's what I call a good downfall, nice pic. cya
  20. Hi Rob, Log in details worked fine for me - I just cut an pasted them from your email. It may be that your browser security settings are blocking the cookie. Tight lines, Elton
  21. Hi, I know it's nothing to do with Fishing really, but it's on the same principal. So IF fishing did cause pain & suffering, then why the hell don't the ban smoking then ? we see all the time, notice's that "Smoking Kills", they are humans suffering !!!!!! sorry if this is off topic, but I don't see people making a big fuss about that one. just a point of view. cya
  22. Hi, OK so not a suprise that someone came-up with a report to say fish do feel pain, I guess just to combat the earlier one which said "they don't feel pain", typical of the press to jump on the latest report, when little was said in the media about the first one which said they don't feel pain. To me this latest report was expected. Any being of any type would react to something nasty put in their mouths, but that does not mean pain to me, nothing prooved really by this report to me. btw, I emailed GMTV, asking them to highlight the earlier report of "No pain", if they dare to proove they take no side in this argument, which seems highly unlikely for them to do. cya Rob
