  1. Having been tutored By Dick in my tender youth, I agree with most of the previous comments but I have to say that, just to keep the picture straight, sometimes he could be just a tad aloof and arrogant .... but he did teach me how to dap for mega-chub on the Ivel and the Ouse, something I'll never forget. I also beat him in a fishing competition for the 1st Prize of £5 (a lot of dosh in those days) ... but he was catching chub and my fish that won the day was a pike that grabbed a small chub as I was trying to land it. Dick was NOT impressed .. and immediately made-up a new rule that next time pike didn't count ... and I was reluctantly given the fiver by Dick and his mates. Good bloke all round, mainly .. and he should have been good as I think he had a degree in engineering from Cambridge, and he knew how to fish, write, and share information.
  2. Tony, If you're starting-out lure-fishing, then fixed-spool reels are probably best. This time of year you probably need to get right down to where the pike are a weedless spoon (to stop you snagging) and a spinnerbait like a Northland Reedrunner are favourites. I think you'd be wasting your time with a Meadow Mouse (a surface lure) atr this time of year unless you're fishing very shallow water. If you're not using braid already, I'd give it a go in favour of a mono. I'd suggest 30 lb braid and wire for starters and you can drop down in BS once you get to know your swims, snags etc. Of course you still need a set of wrire cutters, long nosed pliers, forceps, landing net (wide mesh) unhooking mat or weight the fish in the net.
  3. Elton, I thought it was well-know that Our Bob is one of the few angling consultants who earned a 6-figure sum and has done for a good few years .. and when you see him catching whe nothers are slashing their wrists, you know why. The last time I bumped into him he was driving around in a nice Merc Estate with his personalised number plate. Good luck to him, says I Diamond Geezer
  4. Japher Didn't mean to confuse you but ""Bristol Amalgamated"" is a bit of a colloquialism; they're really:- Bristol, Bath and Wiltshire Anglers J S Parker, 16 Lansdown View, Kingswood, Bristol BS15 4AW Cheers then DG
  5. I may be misquoting the great man himslef but I think he said something along the lines that nothing looks bigger than a BIG PERCH. I am making a habit of agreeing with Steve B here, in that (a) it's important to actually weigh your perch (obviously) as guessing is just that, and ( that ANY perch that truly weighs 2 lb or over is a superb fish. Imagine breaking the reocrd with a 5 lb 10 oz perch ! D The  G
  6. You might like to consider Bristol Amalgamated Tel: 0117 9672977 I fish mainly the Bristol Avon and they have stretches of that as well as lakes etc D  G
  7. Don't give up! I know lure fishing can be hard(er) in winter but it still works. The main things is to get down to the right depths when the weather is colder. If you're not careful you'll find you are retrieving your lures 10 ft above the pike. Put them where your deadbaits are and use a snagless spoon if you're worried. Perch can be pesky predators and are harder to catch on lures during the winter for sure. And then there's shub .. they're always about and up for grabbing lures whatever the weather D The  G
  8. Nope, I've caught some of my best grayling in the late summer, but, as you say, they don't seem to care about a drop in temperature and will feed in the coldest weather.. beautiful species D The  Geezer
  9. It's all I can do to stop myself from commenting !
  10. Both! I think you were unlucky and perhaps a tad over-optimistic. I've found that with the recent temperature drop that my lure fishing is much less productive and have reverted to sink & draw and deads D The  Geezer
  11. Suggest you email the guys at the PAC who have to deal with these sorts of quezzies on a regular basis http://www.pacgb.com Cheers now DG
  12. The other thing to bear in mind is that as part of its payload, every 30 secs it tries to deactivate your anti-virus and firewall software (see your software supplier's site for specific details) It's a mass mailing worm that grabs files from your HDD, uses addresses from your Address Book, selects one of a huge range of Subjects... and mails them out!
