  1. Is this a good point to come back on topic, perhaps? Ken L wrote the quote beneath - I believe it has relevance here. " I also like to come home to my own culture. English culture, not some homogenised one size fits all mix of everything, English culture ! And it really p***es me off when I see a bunch of wet PC idiots destroying it at every turn. Does that make me narrow minded ? " Perhaps the gentleman chose the wrong approach with his racially inflammatory notice, but isn't it just another example of the gradual erosion of our essential Englishness? Whatever the race, creed or culture of immigrant, it's the people of the host nation who are expected to bend whenever there's a culture clash. Surely it's a topsy-turvy way of doing things. I wouldn't expect the same deference to be shown to me as either visitor or ex-pat in another land. Just whose sensibilities are we protecting with our "PC at all costs" attitude.
  2. Yeah, right. Banning mobile phones worked too, didn't it. Why don't they go the whole hog and ban breathing - it's where were headed in our "can't twitch without permission" society. People have been smoking in cars since the automobile got a roof. When did it become dangerous, pray tell? As Steve has said, it's pretty much an automatic process, and as risk free as any other in-car activity apart from telephone calls, sound system and gadget fiddling and oral sex on the highway. The only objection I can see is the risk to non-smoking passengers.
  3. It must be a regular happening during the dormant spell. Presumably the fish have evolved a strategy for dealing with it or it would be a more common sight.
  4. Alonso's bloody quick off the line, Barry -it'll be a nail-biting race to the first corner. In the end though it's going to be down to tyre strategy again, which is a damn shame. F1's supposed to be about the ultimate drivers wringing everything out of the ultimate machines, not some tyre-economy exercise.
  5. Best post so far this week . Laughed till I choked, mate . Never mind his teeth (lost to a chainsaw), how come he still has all his fingers?
  6. Interesting piece on the BBC news site. Is he right to ban EEs? What do you reckon, then? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-coventry-warwickshire-22104151
  7. Been using the Reuben Heaton Flyweights for years. Seem hardwearing and reliable, and small enough to fit in a pocket. They also have a natty little drawstring bag to keep them from getting scratched in storage. Mine are the 30lb set, but there's a set that goes to 40lb in ounce divisions.
  8. What would the outcome be if he was convicted? His crimes are no worse than a nuisance, but it depends on how in touch with reality the judge is, I suppose. I'd be tempted to let him off with a warning, as long as he didn't regularly cause additional damage or take a crap in the living room or whatever some thieves do at a crime scene.
  9. Just going by what Worms said, I assumed they must be migratory. Quite happy to be put right, Sir. Thanks.
  10. Very funny, mate, very funny indeed. You just blew this thread to bits
  11. If the larks are here, maybe Spring is just around the corner. Whoopee!!!!
  12. They sound like just the job for us anglers, and I'm sure that I've seen the like somewhere before, hmmm.......bit of a headscratcher, that one. Cheers, anyhow, I'll keep an eye out for them.
  13. Just thinking about Trapdoor sets me off. I don't suppose this is an original thread, but what are your favourites, guys?
  14. Knew it was just a matter of time. Come on in, the water's.........freezing
  15. Could you find us a link to the same sort of product, please?
  16. Don't forget to let us know how you get on, Trev. Keep it short and sweet at an easy, small fish venue and you won't go far wrong.
  17. Hey, whaddya know, a bad weather thread and the captain hasn't been on yet to tell us that sunglasses sales are up in Iberia. Surely it can't be long....
  18. I regularly used the 440 for spinning, yes. As you can imagine, it speeded up the casting process no end. In fact, it was used for almost every aspect of my freshwater fishing, save piking (for which I used a 300). If heavier line was needed for legering, deeper spools from the 300 came in handy. Back to spinning with the 440 - it was mainly light stuff for perch and occasionally trout, using Mepps up to size 3 and spoons of similar size.
  19. I save left-over maggots in this way, but they're always freezer-burnt and rather dark after freezing. Is there a right and wrong way to do it, or are they OK anyway?
  20. Never had a 410, but had no line twist problems with my 440s, although the 840 was a bastard for it. Is the rotating-head direction the same for the 410 and 440?
  21. I see gallon drunks at both private and council-run day ticket venues in our area. It has always been so, but never as blatant as in recent years. I'm talking about daytime sessions here - these men are then getting in the car after what is effectively an all-day binge and driving home. The council venues have public access, so there's no question about illegality, but you can't blame the parkies for staying out of it.
  22. It's almost as if she planned it to mask the launch of the PIP scheme. Wouldn't put it past the old bat.
  23. Of all the reels that I've ever owned, a Mitchell 308 that a friend gifted me at age 13 is the one that I'll never part with. He'd "improved" it with a thickly applied coat of matt black paint which took forever and a day to pick off with my fingernails. Fortunately, the finish (and the Prince badge beneath) was still relatively unmarked. It still works properly despite being (at over 50 years old) the same age as me. Considering all the advancements in reel tech since it was made, it remains an efficient and pleasant tool to use - and I can still get spares for it, too!
  24. Not sure I completely understand that statement, Chesters. Do you mean that the parents of naive children rescued from cultists are ripe for the picking?
  25. Snap. First thing that went through my head was - " Oh no, it's one of those 'orrible things!" Probably the worst reel ever made.
