  1. sorry no the nidd and swale . . they are both kinda popular up here . .
  2. Why the question mark Peter .. does anyone have an opinion on this subject .. . I mean what could possibly be wrong putting barbel in a stillwater. .aren't all fish just the same really . . I an off on a short holiday now
  3. the matchman is black . . the drennan maroon. I have used the drennan one for years now .. all my wippings go from the point upwards . . and sometimes if I am in a rush they overlay eachother in a crossed pattern . . it has never failed me yet . . used to use the matchman tyer but got into a bad habbit and then every knot started to pigtail . . . stick with it .. the maroon is the coolest tool . .
  4. Cowthorpe and Thornton bridge both hold some marvellous Barbel and some truly specimen chub. Nun Monkton and it;s animal peg is probably the best around the area . . and maunby and it's associated stretches have some ideal barbel too. If you are interested in details - sorry year book only . . then drop me a line .. If I advertise again I will probably get shot )
  5. Nathan, Peter is right . . simple economics would not allow these company to continually attend these exhibitions and sell 70 pound equipment for 10 quid, month in month out. I am not saying that the tackle you bought was not good . . . and it maybe perfect for a life to come . . but compared to the other features of a bonefide 70 pound rod you may find it somewhat lacking it certain departments. There is a little more to do with it also than bulk buying . . alot of it is pretty drossy stuff . . although saying that I am normally at them . . for instance look at the lated range of landing net heads for sale . . then look at how much screw thread is visible to connect it to the handle . not much matey . . chances are after a couple of times .. not only will the head be useless but the handle thread will be so crossthreaded and knarled you will need to replace that one too. but each year I buy one . . just incase ;o)
  6. what section, can you put the smaller end through the larger bit and tape up ?
  7. I put tench in mine 6 years ago, they are all still there and occasionally feed under the lillys or hide on a hot day. Apart from that I do not see them much . . mine is 20 x 16 and 5 deep at one end . . It you have never tried feeding by hand it is a real pleasure . . I have a 5lb common carp that not only takes the bread but a whole finger too
  8. the second is not as far fetched as you may think. A lot of ignorance surrounds the pike, many anglers think that removing them for the water and killing them is actually preserving something. maybe all the monthly and weekly angling mags should get together and run a huge saturated campaign about the benefits of pike . . . apart from how aerodynamic they fly thro the air into the nearest bush
  9. quote: Very sensible idea being as the club can be fined if one of its members is caught. by whom ?
  10. what about the doting old grandma, saves all year to buy the grandson some floats . . what do they tell her . . or worse the wife buying a suprise aniversary present for hubby ! ring the police . . . although from recent reports I wouldn't bother . . they never turn up saying they are too busy . .
  11. PENSIONERS ! and they still want half price books or cheaper okay . . sorry . . we won't go there again
  12. There was a bit more depth to the question chesters. heres why I was quite suprised on a recent holiday to centre parks to find that they actually planted some types of spruce and pine trees in an attempt to keep grey squirrels out and maintain the red squirrel population. I wondered if the same could be used in waters to promote some breeding and deter some breeding practices of fish. I guess then that it is more of a free for all on the roots then . . . and the river fish stick to the gravel ?
  13. I would like to promote the spawning of silver fish (bream and Roach mostly) in an 8 acre stillwater. It was initially a gravel pit, which over the years has suffered from weed (great rafts of weed coming from depths of around 12 feet and probably deeper) around certain parts of the lake there are shelves and plataus down to around 5 feet . . what is the best "all round" plant to put it, that can easily managed, won't grow crazy across all the lake. It is mandatory that any parts the break off do not stray and propogate in the open waters (10 feet and deeper), maybe a lilly although these take sometime to establish (I would think from my own ponding experience) any suggestions ? also the water is on a flood plane, although I do not think that would limit my options too much . .
  14. could they feasibly all die, appear on the top in an afternoon and all dissapear at the sametime ?though some were an ounce some were upto a pound allegedly. . nobody has admitted to removing them . . members and the EA said they do not remove dead fish without contacting club officials.
  15. now to be really clever as a tackle shop owner .. why not get online in the shop and put a sign in the window . . Rod licences on sale here . . that way you could register customers at the shop with a credit card . . take their cash . . having it in your bank till the visa bill came in . . now that is a slick idea . . does anyone out there do that ?? and think of the all the pre-season tackle you could flog when they came in for the new year . .
  16. I am a little lost here . . we are discussing the benefits of using post offices for licence renewal as it has potential of saving lots of small outlets and jobs .. however . . if we were the interested in British commerce . . why are we all here and not down our local tackle shop "callin" and buy bit's n pieces and keeping them going too ?? How many tackle shops have closed over the last years due to internet shopping and lack of "need to pop in for knowledge etc . .." ??
  17. I was under the impression that at some point after death all fish gassed up and floated. I attended a stillwater on 6 several occasions over 3 or 4 days, after a report of some 200 plus fish deaths (mostly roach) - to find less than 8 fish of different sizes and in various states of decomposition. Is there a simple rule of thumb on this . . could 200 dead fish have surfaced and sunk after a few hours (pecked by birds, rats etc) . . talking to the EA fisheries team during the time - they reassured my initial thoughts being of fish stress due to breeding and maybe low oxygen . . and it may have been exagerated into a horror story. Several others also visited and saw little or no change in the numbers of dead fish inbetween these times either. but I am interested in knowning now .. generally do most fish species and sizes gass up upon breakdown of organic matter and float . . and for how long . . as ever another piece of string question . ..
  18. sounds like horse tail to me . . especially if it is standing a foot out of the water
  19. sorry on this one chaps . . but here is one I heard today "went fishing with jon last night, only for an hour . . went roach bashing . . all of a sudden jon's rod bent double, the tip then dived under the water. After several minutes of fighting and line dragging through the water, the rod straightened back and a roach of about 12oz flew out of the water. All serated down both sides . . he said he had seen the pike that took the roach it was big . . unfortunately I didn't cos I was running back to the car for the landing net" so it's not just the young ones . . Jon1 is 54 and Jon2 is 56 - I have no part in this play only as story teller...
  20. yes, he has some good ideas on the close season issues too . . well off on a short break now . . but will be happy to come back to a hot topic. . . now yiberty-yaberta . .. . that's one I would gladly see if all it's teeth were missing
  21. that is a good fish Nik . . beats my English PB . .
  22. Cheers Chris . . will start to shrink and and enlarge the more common and then I am sure I will be back on where is best to post them . . well I will be if it is anything like my previous attempts at adding pictures
  23. Okay . . hows about someone supplying the figures and see what I can knock together ? we could do it as a test for the most common fish A roach must be easiest anyone any idea where the data could come from . . 1st 5 years worth only and average sizes ? Gareth, please can you send me a copy of the pike one . . I am suprised there is nothing else out there on the net, anyone know of anything ?
  24. Slamo disgorger ! definately not a waste of money
