  1. Gloves reduce the feel you have for the paddle. Tried them, hated them swam cos of them. Wont help while fishing but pogies are better than gloves while paddling. link
  2. I'm an ex white water canoeist. The internal layers need to be thermal ie top and long johns. These allow any sweat to be wicked away from the body. Cotton is a big no no as it wont retain any heat when wet. Wool on the other hand does.
  3. Mono has a stretch factor of approx 25%. Braid on the other hand is approx 3%. It wont take a shock load ie if the line catches round a rod ring on the cast. Thats why the breaking strains used seem so high. A minimum of 30lb breaking strain is recommended for lure fishing using lure up to approx 1oz. As with most types of fishing the casting weight needs to be balanced to the rod used. As to what type of lures, everyone will have their own idea. As a very general guide a selection of mepps type spinners. In various sizes and colours. The same with spoons. A few plugs like the Shakespeare Big S. If you can afford, a few shads from the Storm range. Warning lures are like floats they are very collectable.
  4. Just keep making phone calls to BT, complain to as many different people as you can. Keep a record of the people who you speak to and the promises made. You can then accuse them of lying to you. Get every one you speak to to put you through to complaints. Eventually some one will take action as they realise that many man hours are being wasted.
  5. Un install version 3 then go to oldversion.com look for firefox and download the last version 2. You will get updates for this. just ignore ant offers to update to version 3 that pop up later.
  6. Go into Pickerings of Burslem, they will be able to give you info on clubs in the area.
  7. There are also a wealth of clubs in the Crewe, Nantwich and Stoke areas. Offering all types of fishing. A visit to any good tackle shop in the area will provide all the info you need.
  8. Have down loaded it twice, and deleted it twice. My pc freezes up when surfing. Version 2 has worked perfectly.
  9. Fishing Republic sell the same reel (Shadowlandia) in both sizes at the same price. Yes the reel foot is big, to big to fit under a screw reel fitting. I took mine to a bench grinder and then finished the raw edge off with black acrylic paint. I sat at home watching TV spinning the reel to help run it in. First time out with it and I was impressed how easily it gave line on the trot. I did clean off the original oil and replaced it with sewing machine oil.
  10. Have just Received a letter from Severn Trent water stating that the disinfection of domestic water supply is being changed to a chloraminated supply. Apparently this is a mix of chlorine and ammonia. Its also toxic to fish. How do I ensure water for a pond and tanks is safe??
  11. There is a hydrometer for measuring battery acid. I know the one we used was never used for con. acid but it lasted for years and it was used daily.
  12. Try one of the local canals after dark using worm as bait.
  13. Whoops John that unfortunately isnt true. I dont have the reference to the scientific study carried out, and as my daughter is now in Australia very difficult to get. She actually covered this during her degree course in Animal welfare. The elecro- magnetic field given off by the turbines affects fish. It does something to the sensory organs. There are two schemes being put forward where I live. One in the middle of prime farm land. The other right slap bang in the middle of forestry. Why so it can power a so called eco village. Hundreds of acres of wood land cut down to make holiday homes. Both areas WILL BE BADLY affected by increased traffic during construction and afterwards for maintainence. Just think of the increase in CO2 emmissions.
  14. Chesters I dont understand??? you say one car is a disability car and by this do you mean Motability??. If so I can only assume you took the loan to buy a car instead of having a new one. If so why?? loan to buy a car means finding all the running costs. New car, no tax, no insurance, no repair bills, no mot costs. A new car every three years.
  15. Yes easter is 21-24 March this year, so its the closed season. However there is some trout fishing available above Welshpool or on the Vyrnwy. Perhaps not lots of fish but there are a few.
  16. Re The umbrella. The obvious one is the removable pole which then screws back in at an angle. Years ago an umbrella was brought out in which the centre pole was removed and then refitted to the pole but outside the umbrella so there was no pole on the inside. Re keepnet. The same idea could be done using 4 pieces of cord, and there would be no cutting of the net.
  17. I have been having problems with a braodband connection that keeps dropping. After contacting tech supp. They suggested this. go to run, type cmd then type in netstat. If I have more than ten tcp adresses then run av spyware etc. I have over 30 tcp entries. I have run avast, spybot ad aware and a couple of more..... only tracking cookies found. However whilst watching spybot run there were several file names that caught my attention. but spybot says system is clear. the files I noticed wwwcoolsearch, smit fraud, virtue monde for example a google search suggested they were nasties is this so and is there any way of removing them?
  18. As a disabled driver holding a blue badge, heres my ten penorth. Strange to say there is a law passed by parliament that requires people to provide disabled access. This includes parking bays. The same law also states that the disabled bays must be policed by themselves to stop abuse. This law also includes angling clubs to, so they have to provide access for the disabled.
  19. Most recommendations when using braid suggest using the same diameter braid as the nylon you normally use. To my mind your set up leaves some questions re actual breaking strains. I wouldnt mind betting that the actual BS of the Berkeley line is a good few pounds heavier than that stated. Giving a very unbalanced set up. Braid of 15-20lb BS would be far better. As to makes of braid I use power pro for piking, lures and drift floating, the fact it floats does help. I also use Climax braid for lures to in a lighter BS this is a sinking braid. I paid £4.95 for 100yds thinking it was worth a gamble and being honest I'm impressed.
  20. Theres the Trent and Mersey canal out towards Sandbach. There the canal at the Red Bull towards Kidsgrove.
  21. It could be happening when you close the bail arm by winding the handle. this has a tendency to throw a loop of line. Close the bail arm manually, and the problem should go away.
  22. Use what ever you do for the hair and tie this to the hook using a KK. After threading it back thru the eye tie a half hitch on the shank. Slip on a short length of silicone tube to cover knot and the loose end trim the loose end before the silicone is fully positioned. I to had no problems with the KK and it breaking till I started using flouro. Might be the brand I'm using , this is why I had to tie a separate hair.
  23. Whippings need either a cellulose based sealer and varnish. Or an epoxy finish. A normal type of varnish will discolour whippings. If an epoxy is used the rod has to be rotated till its dry or it will run. A good quality polyurethane varnish for the blank.
  24. I use a " Stanley knife blade" held at 90 deg to the blank to scrape of the varnish. Then finish off with at least 2 grades of wet and dry using plenty of water. The handle can be scrubbed with a nail brush and if you can find any VIM or AJAX powder. Failing that use Jif. Your correct in saying fibre glass doesnt need varnishing, but it always was. Probably to get the shine to attract anglers. The ring whippings do need to be sealed and varnished. Always whipping up the foot of the ring fro m the blank to the eye. To make this easier I always grind the end of the foot to get a better slope so the whipping flows easily up the foot. Good luck with the project and remember to take your time as any gaps will be magnified when the whippings are varnished.
