  1. The only mnemonic I remember from my school days is, "Never Lower Tilly's Pants; Grandma Might Come Home", which helps one remember the bones in the wrist. However, I can never reliably remember the order once I get past Mars so maybe a good mnemonic would have been a help.
  2. Thanks all. Had a great 71st birthday but put off a planned outing to town for some fancy food when it started to snow. We'll try again this afternoon.
  3. A welcome from me as well. Since you are a youngster of 60, you should have at least 20-30 more years to enjoy the sport.
  4. You can use forceps or small needle nose pliers to crush the barb which will effectively make a hook barbless. You can snip off one of the sections of a treble hook to make it into a double. You can also buy double hooks from a number of online shops and modify your lures. A thing to try that can work especially well in cold weather when fish aren't moving around much is to fish a lure under a float. Just give it a gentle tip movement to give it some "life". Experiment with different depths since you may find that on a given day the active fish may prefer a specific depth and active fish are the ones that will be the most likely to strike a lure. It is important to use a rod designed for ultra light lures and the lightest b/s line that is suitable for the fish you target. I'm not sure about the availability of U/L rods in the UK but someone should be able to help you out. If not, they are readily available from shops in the US and I can help you with that if need be.
  5. 9 was the number for so long that it would be nice to reach it again.
  6. Looks like one major good idea. Much smoother ride if you want to maintain any speed in rough water and probably gives lots more speed for a given motor size than a conventional hull.

I'd never heard of it until a UK friend emailed that link Cory. I am now officially a fan. Chesters - in regards to your bird example, you are probably right about feeding birds in Winter upping their survival rate to the point that fewer adults (as a percentage of the population when Winter starts) will survive the next Winter. That said, I'm a huge fan of having lots of birds when the bugs start hatching as the weather warms so that fewer bugs survive to bite me so while it may be an issue for the birds, it certainly isn't for me. However, I'm doubtful of a significant long term effect. Take wolf & rabbit populations in the areas of the US that have large wolf populations for instance. Starting: - Lots of wolves, lots of rabbits. Wolves eat well and have lots of little wolflings. Time goes on: - Added wolves mean they eat more rabbits than before. - Rabbit population begins to decline. - Wolf population begins to decline due to less available rabbit meat for food. - Fewer wolves means higher birth rate & survival rate for rabbits. It works out to be a cyclic thing. Both populations increase & decrease but about 2 years apart. Since rabbits are tasty to humans and wolves not so much, it means that people need an alternate meat supply when rabbits are scarce. All of this sort of thing (at least, where diet consists of what you can grow or kill to eat) is fairly short term. It takes a significant change such as weather over a few years not allowing the usual amount of rabbit food to grow to make a significant shift. So, feed birds in Winter if it makes you happy with no harm done.

  9. LOL - that one took me a minute.
  10. Great shot of an interesting beastie I've never seen before. What is it?
  11. I once believed that I took a good look both ways ("good" as in "effective") but my first visit to one of the Virgin Islands where they drive on the "wrong" side of the road convinced me otherwise after I'd nearly been hit by an auto when I crossed the street. I may have looked both ways but I only really paid attention to what I considered the direction from which traffic should have been coming. It happened there almost every visit to that island and also happened on my one visit to the UK.
  12. If we define: - Day = from one sunrise to the next sunrise and - Year = one complete circuit of the nearest sun then an answer would be any planet makes a complete circuit of its sun faster than it makes a complete rotation. note: "Da" changed to "Day" in the title
  13. Andy - apparently some sort of glitch blocked me from the area of the site where I could do what you originally asked. Probably, in hind site, a good thing since your issue appears to be tolerable with the new software tweaks. I can get to it now and can wipe you & your posts off the forum as if you'd never existed if that's still what you want but I hope you have reconsidered and want to stay active on AN. Your absence (and the absence of your many posts) would be a real shame as your stuff is almost always positive and productive. Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss this.
  14. Phone - try rebooting your PC and trying again. As of 0250 on Thursday (EST) the link worked fine and took me right to the photos. Chris - good stuff and thank you.
  15. Brace yourself This Hologram is amazing You have to see it to believe it.. https://www.youtube.com/embed/vZRFcGrrsyc
  16. "I've outlived my dick." A Poem from an unknown author in the 1930s. (note that, regardless of what you can read in many internet articles, while country singer Willie Nelson did use the title in an interview, he DID NOT write the poem) My nookie days are over, My pilot light is out. What used to be my pride and joy, Is now my water spout. Time was when, on its own accord, From my trousers it would spring. But now I've got a full time job, To find the friggin thing. It used to be embarrassing, The way it would behave. For every single morning, It would stand and watch me shave. Now as old age approaches, It sure gives me the blues. To see it hang its little head, And watch me tie my shoes!!
  17. A short documentary film about unarmed photo recon missions over Germany during WWII including film of a Spitfire and its pilot. The narrator starts out talking way too fast and is hard to understand at times but it gets better and the interview with the pilot is fine. http://www.youtube.com/embed/ie3SrjLlcUY
  18. Backwards in fast spurts and forward slow & steady can both work depending on the fish's preference at a given time. Its a trial & error situation so you really should try both and see what works best at that particular time. The lure shape, size, and colour should mimic whatever species of mud bug is prevalent in a given water. The stand up jig is also an excellent idea and especially on a mud bottom since the little cloud of mud when you move the jig is much like what happens when a cray is trying to escape.
  19. The prototype is a one person 1000 Hp electric car. Not sure how much demand there is but it should be an attention grabber for a new auto company. The Car
  20. Andy - I would help if I could but at least for now, I can't. It would need to be done from the admin section and when I click on the link to log in (its apart from the normal AN login) I get a 404 page not found. In the past I would have asked Elton about the problem but he hasn't responded to any of my emails or PMs for some months and I quit trying.

    Mango Mania

Maybe he thinks that seeds only come in packets with instructions for planting printed on the outside. After all, "eat fruit, poop seeds on the ground, seeds sprout", is a very complicated concept.
  22. There might be a "fix" for your issue but it is pretty geeky (someone would have to set it up for you), might be more than your PC could handle, and might not work but here goes. One caveat - I've been out of mainstream geek stuff for a while so you will want to get advice from someone who is more current. 1st option: I imagine your camcorder would work fine on a PC running Windows 8 or 8.1 since that operating system has been around for a while and Sony would probably have working drivers for Win8. Its usually possible to run an older operating system as a program on your PC. It should then be possible to load the camcorder program within the Win8 program. Note my free use of "should", "probably", and other quibbles. 2nd option (not so geeky): Buy a cheap used Win8 machine to use for the camcorder. That said, unless the need is urgent, you'll be better off waiting for Sony to build reliable Win10 drivers for the device unless its old enough that they won't bother.

Indeed - here's wishing each and every one of us a great 2016.

Yup. I have no idea why they bother with that Celsius nonsense. After all, a system that freezes water at zero degrees and boils water at 100 degrees is so confusing. Much better to freeze water at 32 degrees and boil it at 212 degrees. That said, freezing at 273º Kelvin and boiling at 373º K is OK too This whole metric thing is just too simple to be really useful. An inch is about the length of the 2nd joint of the index finger which ought to be good enough for anyone.
