Looking around at some of the threads the dreaded CA is mentioned again and the usual claptrap from both sides of the argument are spouted out getting us nowhere. Martin Slater has been mentioned as "our" MP. He isn't my MP as I can't vote for him. So where does our MP (the one we can vote for) stand on angling? Does your local MP support angling or not or perhaps not care one way or the other? With an election on the horizon isn't it time to find out? My personal feeling will be that most MPs don't really care one way or the other if they answer at all. If anyone does find out where their MP stands would they please let everyone know.

If the fish are 6" off an island or far bank of a canal a pole comes totally into it's own. If you cast a bomb over you'll spook the fish, if you cast a waggler over it will come back as you sink the line or probably move if you don't sink the line.

Chris Is there enough line on your spool? It should be filled to the lip so the line is level with the skirt. Not having a reel spooled right is a common cause of not being able to cast very far. At least you tried though. Good luck in the future.

Sorry Chris Your swim is the area in front of you where you are fishing within reason. Baits I'd go with pinkie, maggot, chopped worm if there are likely to be perch about and a few slices of bread for punch or small flake. It depends mainly on the venue you will be fishing, if your going to a commercial it might be worth taking sweetcorn.

As it's really cold at the moment most of the fish will be on or near the bottom. I would plumb the depth and fish an inch or two overdepth to start with. I wouldn't introduce any loosefeed either. The fish will likely be shoaled up so try casting to different areas of your swim until you find the fish then you can guess? if they want a bit of feed to get them going but only two or three maggots at a time. If the fish come on to the feed you can always add more loosefeed, probably half a dozen maggots after every fish. Also try different depths to find the fish, they know where they want to be, we just have to best guess. Enjoy it.

Seeing as I have been accused of being a CA member with a hidden agenda could someone please give me my membership number. I haven't followed the hunt for about 28 years and the only real shooting I did was in defence of queen and country. But I was born and bred in the country so I do have an understanding of how the countryside works. I couldn't care less if shooting and hunting stopped tomorrow as I do neither but as I and others have tried to point out angling is going to be targeted in the same way as hunting. The opion poll that shows 70% against a ban on fishing and shooting also had a poll showing 65% against a hunting ban. But as polls like that can be easily manipulated neither means a rats arse.
