  1. I don't know what everybody is getting so fired up about a load of wasters who are getting thousands of £s for being there, they even mentioned it in parliament. I didn't hear anybody in parliament saying any about the 4 marines who went in, strapped to the wings of an Apache chopper, to recover the body of a comrade that had been lost in Afganistan. What is this country coming to?
  2. Sea Trout done on an open fire, covered in bacon and a dram. Got a Rock Cod off the cliffs north of Aciltibuie, it was bright red and weighed about 4lbs. Two fillets off and cooked on an open fire made out of old fish boxes. Went back the following year and the grill wire (from an old cooker) that I had found to cook on was still in place on the stones where I had built the fire.
  3. I would use a tube on each sole, or at least a tube and a half between them. Better safe than sorry.
  4. One side is enough but put plenty on. Tape soles to boot until set. A tip when using Aquasure, it comes out like toothpaste but begins to run when it hits the air. Wet your finger and run it along (like when your puting silicon on tiles etc), it does work, always lay as flat as possible.
  5. I seen an article in one of the angling papers some years ago. It contained a picture of a cormorant that had been shot on the continent. It had been gutted and there were eight 4oz carp perfectly formed inside it. They had obviously been taken one after the other as there wasn't any signs of being digested, they are more common on the river here in the closed season. I have seen them wrestling with seatrout over a pound.
  6. I use them at least once a week, I would use it more often but the wife says chicken once a week is enough.
  7. One of the biggest problems is getting the old sole off. With patience and care it can be done with a grinder. You can buy the set of new soles from any Daiwa dealer, I have found the contact adesive you get with the kit is not very reliable and I use Aqua Sure.
  8. Bloke wakes up in hospital, he has a broken leg and arm, 3 cracked ribs and has a golf club wrapped round his neck. The doc asks him what happend. He replied, "I was playing golf with my wife and she sliced a shot which landed in a field with cows in it, I seen a cow with something white sticking out of it's ar*e and walked over and lifted it's tail, I lifted the cows tail and said, this looks like your's. Thats the last thing I remember".
  9. I agree with the above, but No2, why introduce fry from another river into the system ( which has been done in the past). No3, how do we know they are sterile. The other question is the size of some of these fish. The normal size you see in the supermarket is 4/5/6lbs obviously done for the housewife. Some of these fish were 12/16lbs???
  10. I am an angler, I don't know anything about the scientific side of things. I deal in facts. The facts that were stated in T&S are, flabby fish, not true, verocious feeders, not true, ragged fins and tails, true. So how do I as an ordinary angler believe anything that is written when I know that 2/3rds of it is not true. The last big outbreak we had here was in 98, I don't remember them colouring up like they have this time, also they have milt and eggs. What the results will be on the system, I haven't got a clue
  11. We are talking salmon lines here and double handers. You will have great difficulty as a novice spey casting with a WF line . Notice I didn't say spey line which is a WF but has a longer belly. An ordinary WF is ok for overhead casting but not for spey casting. "Why spey cast". Usually said by people who can't do it. Get yourself a good instructor (APGAI) and learn it properly as it will open up the river to you. I am asked quite often to teach people , I refer them to a friend who is an instructor, there is a great difference in "showing" somebody how to do it. I would say the instructor's greatest asset is being able to correct faults. Also the first thing people ask when you make a good cast "what line, rod etc". They should ask "Who taught you to do that".
  12. Thank you Chris. When I worked in a tackle shop the reps used to get onto me about me mill ends. "You will ruin the business if you kep selling mill ends". I awlays said "At least for a couple of quid you will find out which line suits your rod" ps I have just lashed out for the dearest line Iv'e ever bought, £19.99 for a spey line. It works, but no better than the 2 millends I joined together. :
  13. I've said it before, millends. If you want to splash out abit, try Shakespeare Worcester's.
  14. If your just starting why don't you try some millends first (5 for under£20). Spey lines are good , but you have to be able to use them. They will not make a bad caster any better, (no offence). You can also chop them up and make them the same profile as a spey line . Some people get confused , an ordinary WF line is not the same as a spey although it may something similar on the box . I hope I'm not teaching you to suck eggs, but I see quite a lot of it going on i.e. people buying kits and there is an ordinary WF line and they struggle.
  15. Sandpiper thanks for the reply. I got a rod done before, complete refurbish. It was so well done I thought they had broken mine and sent me a new one. Cost £80. Unfortunately they are no longer in buisness Maybe thats why Thanks for the offer. Jack.
  16. I need a 16ft Kielder fly rod refurbished, new eyes, whipped and varnished. Any contacts welcome . I have already been quoted a price but I think it's a bit expensive. Cheers.
  17. Quote by editor of T&S Oct Issue. "These fish were caught by anglers with the greatest of ease, their flabby bodies, ragged fins and tell-tale appetites characteristic of their artifical upbringing. In the latest incident, fish between 7lb &13lb were seen swarming over the deeper parts of the river and anglers - not all legitimate- were out in force trying to catch them ". The only statement from above that is correct is, "ragged fins". The other statement about easy to catch, not true, flabby bodies, not true. To clarify the above, anglers were allowed to fish in a restricted area (below barrage) for 4 hours, any legal method, 20/25 anglers, fish showing in pool, result , 1 caught and 1 lost. I have seen numerous fish caught and gutted, there is no evidence that they eat parr or anything else. They taste as good or better than anything you will buy in the shops. As regards about the damage they may do to the natural stock, I haven't a clue. Comments please.

  19. I'm looking for a source of pawls for my JW Young 1540 salmon reel. Any ideas please. Cheers.
  20. corydoras, Ref Alexandria, if you would like to check out the following web site, it might bring back some memories. www.robbieredball.net
  21. They did/do allow the fly and maggot on a tributary of our system which they fish solely for salmon and sea trout. It is fly only on this river but the above is/was allowed. Why don't they call it what it is, "bait fishing".
  22. Have use a high vis banana yellow line for years because of my eyesight . I have never found a problem with them and I fish the dry fly as much as I can.
