  1. If a boat approaches you (normally happens when you are catching and there not), put a lead head on and cast towards them. They usually get the message that they are getting to close.
  2. Horses for courses they say. You will not fish my local river with anything under 12ft under normal conditions. Suffice to say, go with the flow When the water is low it is great for the s/trout fishers and that is where the shorter rod comes into it's own You don't need to spend a fotune on a "double hander".
  3. Check this out www.flyfishsaltwaters .com/sbssnake_fly.
  4. Will try and get a photo with a more detailed discription and email it to you.
  5. I will try and explain. Get a size 6 single hook and cut just above the bend so you are left with shank and the eye. Whip on to this some mono about 10/15lb breaking strain and put a treble on the end, size of treble and length of mono ,your choice. Dress with mylar tubing by passing tubing over mono, secure at head and just above treble and tie a wing on to the head. Have used it with some success a few years ago for S/Trout in the sea. Tight lines.
  6. Up here the Guidelines have a good name. I really does depend on what you want to spend. There is a great buy on the market at the moment and it's the Shakespeare Oracle, will do all you want for £49.99.If you are using something that is "breaking your wrist", I would get a lesson. ps The 3 piece 15ft Oracle is much better than the 4 piece.Up here the Guidelines have a good name. 7. Another view is these big fish don't do much for the gene pool, some of them produce very little spawn compared to there size. I have also seen somewhere that the hatcheries prefer fish in the teens as they produce more eggs/milt.
  8. Unless the ghilles etc carry weighing slings, unhooking mats and 100lb+ scales, there will never be a record salmon, unless it is killed. Without the above gear, there is noway that a fish that size can be weighed safely. I'ts gone back, so I think we can forget it. They could have a system that fish could be wieghed and returned as in Iceland etc.
  9. The measurements make it bigger than Miss Balantines, but who cares? It will never be recognised. Magnificent effort, and catch and release.
  10. The only thing I would add is ,be careful if you use fur and feathers from shooting friends. It can be a good source of material but it must be well cleaned and kept in crushed moth balls or something similar to get rid of the "beasties" and keep it sepparate as well. ps be careful when you crush the moth's ball's
  11. "Where to go for a really hot curry". How about Afganistan.:-)
  12. I just called a friend. He said, with an allen key remove the drag adjustment and reverse. If in any doubt contact Garry Windgate at the Glasgow Angling Center and he will talk you through it. Hope this helps.
  13. A number of years ago I was approached by a Cornishman (nothing against them) on my local river, he was asking about the elver population. He said he was touring Scottish rivers to find out if he could get people to supply him elvers, he said he would pay £32 a kilo (if I remember rightly). I thought it was a lot to give then, they don't stand a chance with the prices they are now. He didn't get any from here as they are so few now you rarely see them. I have seen a smaller river with so many it looked like black weed, I didn't tell him about that either.
  14. I have not read all the posts on this subject, there is so many quotes etc. I lost track. I don't think I seen anywhere anybody saying that there was easier ways to earn a living. Part of my family lost 3 sons to the seas doing what you were watching as a tv program. They deserve there money. God bless them all. Remember this the next time you have your fish supper.
  15. Before I needed specs I used to buy my polaroids for salmon spotting from woolworths for about £4.99. They seemed to be just as good as the clip ons I have to buy now. I liked the brown ones.
  16. I used them some years ago, even on dry flies. They do work and are a great benifit to the the people with not so good sight.
  17. I live beside a very dangerous piece of footpath/ cycle track. The biggest problem is bikes without bells, what good reason can anybody give for not having a bell. My hearing is perfect but some of these mountain bikes can be right on you before you know it, they are also quite heavy but I will promise you this, the one that crashes into me and breaks my rod will have to have an operation to remove the remainder from a certain part of his anatomy. There are other user's of this footpath/cycle track, wimmen with prams, kids coming and going to school, dog walkers etc and anglers. Apart from that there is miles of cycle track, they call them pavements up here.
  18. I have been through 3 pair of breathables in the last 4/5 years. I would seriously consider going for the ones with the boots attached as I have had more leaks in the neoprene socks than the body. The other thing to consider is where you do most of your wading, brambles, fences and such like don't go together with breathables although are a joy to wear when there all right.
  19. Get yourself on to a salmon river that allows trout fishing and use the above mentioned flies, great brownies early on. (providing they allow it down there)
  20. Ref "Mackerel cooked just after they were caught". I had a party of Americans out and they were quite happy catching mackerel. they had been puting them back when a women asked if the were any good to eat. I took one off her line, filleted it and went below and stuck it on the grill. It was a big mistake, I spent the rest of the day, and the following 5 weekends, grilling mackerel. It was nice to see them being put to good use for a change. Best shell fish oysters, spouts, and langoustenes.
  21. I'd make her get the beers in every time she rang the bell.
  22. Lads and Lassies we dropped a clanger. Nobody should have answered this post and Ferret would be tearing his hair out :
  23. Burns Night Speech.
