  1. To get out of snags, simply apply reasonable pressure to the line (not o much that you actually break the line). Then, whilst the line is under tension, tap the rod repeatedly. This sends waves down the line and will hopefully dislodge the hook from the snag. If this doesn't work, then you're pretty much stuffed.
  2. It just goes to show that newcomers to the sport don't read up and throughly research the dos and don'ts of fishing. Rules that are simple to abide by are neglected sometimes and this gives us anglers a bad name/image.
  3. Congratulations DayR. I just hope I catch a big un soon too.
  4. Depends what the fault is mate. Be a little more specific then we can answer your question.
  5. Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think the bag trick would do - can't really buy a bait fridge or anything like that since I'm starting uni. Thanks again.
  6. Darn! I was hoping to do some fishing this week before I leave good ol' Manchester.
  7. I am not permitted to use the fridge to store my maggots. My mum absolutely hates them. So, I have to resort to the maggots being stored outside in a cool place, like shade provided by an overhanging tree. I buy mixed maggots, but overnight 75% of them would turn to casters. I purchase them in 1/2 pint quantities. I was wondering if there is a way to prevent the majority of the maggots from turning into casters overnight without the need of a fridge. Help greatly appreciated. Many thanks.
  8. I think I'm going to have a go with the baits again and see what happens. Maybe I'll get lucky again (I've got a landing net now though - I learnt my lesson). I've heard that if you use the normal pellets, like the marine halibut ones, that you need a pellet pump? I would be very grateful if someone could please enlighten me on this topic.
  9. When the Skinz hook and feed pellets were first introduced, many angling magazines hailed them as the new best thing in angling: the hook pellets can be prepared on the bank by simply soaking them in lake water for 5 minutes, and they can be hooked in a variety of ways including hair rigging and side hooking. The stretchy coating of the pellet means that it won't come off on the cast and the fish attractants within kick in immediately. The feed pellets can be used straight from the bag and dissolve completely within 15 minutes, leaving behind loads of fish meal which cretaes pwerful attraction for the fish. The success of these new baits are proven by many expet anglers including Ian Welch and Matt Hayes. I decided to give it a shot. I went to my local canal, set up my tackle and took about 10-15 hookbaits and soaked them for 5 minutes in water. I side hooked one pellet on a size 16 wide gape kamasan hook with a 2.0g insert waggler. Line was 4.0lb with a 3lb hooklink. I casted out to the middle of the canal. There were no bites for about 10 minutes so I threw in some hookbaits (didn't have feed pellets at the time). 5 mins later there was a bite and I hooked a 3lb canal carp! That would have been my PB but since I didn't have a landing net with me I had to let the fella go. Now, to prove that this was not a fluke, I tried again another day, but no luck. I was told that the water quality dropped severely due to the increasing presence of algae, which may have affected fish behaviour. So, I'm wondering if any of you guys have had any success with these Sonu Baits hook pellets and feed pellets? If so, what rig did you use and what fish (and it's size) did you manage to catch on them?
  10. Likekestrel said, either use fluorocarbon or green/brown line. Alternatively, you can buy clear line, and then use permanent green/brown or green/black markers to colour up the line. What this does is it breaks up the outline of the line, making it harder for the fish to see it. Again, as mentioned before, the colouring is dependent on the composition of the lake bed. Good luck to you mate.
  11. 1029!!!! Yaaaaaaahhhhhhhoooooooo!!! lol.
  12. I have to say Richard Hammond is one of the best TV presenters out there. I really hope he pulls through this terrible incident.
  13. I wouldn't really use split shots as a ledger stop - the reson being that the force of the bomb hitting against the shot has the potential to snap the line. Best to use some MAP feeder/float stops. I sit 45 degrees to the swim and set the rod so that the line is 90 degrees to the rod - this allows you to put a slight bend in the tip so that you can detect drop back bites.
  14. Feeder fishing definitely - just started doing that lol.
  15. Okay, okay. Let's all calm down now. The end of the line is this: people have different preferences when it comes to things like this. You can't force people to change their preferences. I think smac and pikergonecarpin have very valid points - a blunt hook has the potential to cause very serious damage to fish than a new one out of the packet.
  16. You mean biodegradeable hooks? That's a good idea. But I doubt the companies will invest in new equipment to make biodegradeable hooks, which, in theory will be less stronger that the ones we use nowadays.
  17. I had a similar experiance when I first started on the fishing scene. I caught a 6oz perch which had the hook right at the back of it's throat. It took me quite a while to get the hook out, and unfortunately it resulted in damage of the fish. Put the poor little fella back, and he floated on the surface of the water. Then all of a sudden a pike came out of nowhere and engulfed the perch. I also must have swore at least a thousand times during the session becuase of tangles, and difficulty finding my tackle etc. Now what I do is I keep a tackle box with me, and organise my tackle into that. Plus, if you get tangles, don't start stressing out or anything, just stay calm and use your head what to do, don't just pull bits of rando mono or you can make the tangle worse.
  18. Since I mainly catch fish below the pound mark, I usually use the same hook for as many sessions as possible until it breaks. The reason why I do this is becuase I never catch big fish. I always keep hooks that have been snagged off the line - you can always attach new line using a hook tyer if it's a spade end one - no need to waste money bying new ones - unless they're blunt of course, but if they are, I would just use a file to sharpen the hook.
  19. Islam is supposed to be a non-violents religion. Islam literally menas peace. However, you get a few absolute thickheads i.e. radical religious muslims who preach hatred etc. etc. and these are the ones who take things too far - burning effigies, bombing chrches, making stupid threats etc. As a direct result of this, people perceive Islam to be a very violent religion. Just because a small fraction of the muslims in the world takes things too far doesn't mean that the whole population is exactly like them. It's like me saying that beccause of the whole Kashmir crisis, what whith the casualties on both sides, that all Indians are murderers etc. etc. Well, in fact, they're not - because I have Indian friends we get on well with eachother and we have no quarrels or anything like that. It's like the whole crisis doesn't even exist in our part of the world. What I'm trying to say is, don't judge a book by it's cover, because that's what a few of you guys are doing. There's good and bad in ALL religions. What I want to know is, why can't the whole bloody population of earth just live in peace? Is that something hard to fulfill? It's just pathetic in my view.
  20. I'm moving to South Kensington, where the Imperial College campus is. Its not too far from Hyde Park.
  21. You're spot on Ken. Heck, I knew what the pope was leading towards, and he was in no way trying to mock Islam or anything like that. However, other muslims tend not to take the time to analyse the context etc. and take it the wrong way. I get really embarassed when things like this happen, and it happens way too often I'm afraid.
  22. Now what on earth is that about? I don't think whatyou said was very appropriate. Think twice before you post something like that.
  23. Hooks to nylon are great if you want to setup you tackle fast. The nylon is tied predominantly to spade end hooks, which are less strong than eyed hooks but allow the bait to behave naturally in your chosen swim. You attach them using the loop to loop method ie. tie a small loop on your main line, pass the nylon through the loop, and htne pass the hook end through the nylon loop and pull tight. I use eyed hooks which I tie myself, because they are usually stronger than spade ends, but the downside is that they don't let the bait behave naturally (so I am told). Plus it's a cheaper way of tying line to hook etc.
