Problem with installation of XP over Vista?

Recommended Posts

Just bought the wife a new PC for Christmas. It had Vista installed and went to install XP. Put in disc and when the system rebooted I got the message File "<windowsroot>system32\ntoskrnl.exe" is corrupt reinstall. HOW do I reinstall as it will not give me a prompt?? In fact it gets to this message and will do nothing else!!

Any good ideas please? I DO have a recovery partition but that also will not boot to due to the above??!!

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

(If you can't help out someone in need then don't bother my old Dad always said! My grandma put it a LITTLE more, well different! It's like peeing yourself in a black pair of pants she said! It gives you a LOVELY warm feeling but no-one really notices!))

try this

Try this:

1. Insert and boot from your WindowsXP CD.

2. At the first R=Repair option, press the R key

3. Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair.

Typically this will be #1

4. Change to the drive that has the CD ROM.

5. Type CD i386, press Enter

6. Type expand ntkrnlmp.ex_ C:\Windows\System32\ntoskrnl.exe, press Enter

7. If WindowsXP is installed in a different location, just make the necessary change to C:\Windows

8. Take out the CD ROM and type exit, press enter

Problem - Vista understands XP but XP does not understand (and cannot deal with) Vista.

You probably need to format the disk and then do a clean XP install. If you want to have both available, you need to install Vista after XP is already there.

Note - I haven't tried with these but that has been the Microsoft pattern for quite a few versions now. You can load as many as your drive will handle but only in chronological order, oldest first.

When you install a newer OS without removing the old one, the new OS 'teaches' the old one how to do things.

Errr - Vista is pretty good and very stable so why do you really need XP? The only thing I can think of is a lack of Vista drivers for some hardware and that is getting pretty rare now that Vista has been around for a while. All but obselete hardware should have a Vista driver if the XP version won't work.

ERRRRRRR, don't think Corydoras has looked at this bit yet. :o:D

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

Right guys, my problem is I do NOT get anything at all but the message that I need to install this file to the root! NO repair option, no c: prompt etc?? JUSt the message that I must copy the file?

And reason I wanted rid of Vista newt is it simply does not suit at all!! All the "Do you REALLY want do do this??" and suchlike!! And also a BIT like joining a new ship, CANNOT find anything!!! Suer some here will know all about that!!!

GOTTA be something??

INCIDENTALLY!! I do have a repair partition on the hard drive, BUT no cd etc! And the repair on the boot from HD does not seem to,work also as this prompt comes up BEFORE it will boo to the repair section.

Cory still thinks Vista sucks, and SP2 has not changed my views any.

One can have dual boot with Vista and XP, no matter which order the OSs are installed.

XP First

or with Vista installed first.

XP First is the best option though.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

Seems the ONLY way to sort this is to mount the HD as a slave and sort it out that way!! As it is at present a master it HAS to boot from the boot sector and so will ignore owt else?? Sound right??

Apparently I am not alone in my opinion that Vista sucks.

  • 7 months later...

I'm trying to replace Vista with XP on a laptop and XP can't even detect a hard drive.

I've got a floppy dos boot disc but nowhere to put it.
