Big Ledger Weights

My initial posting was a suggestion for boat fishing, not for casting!

I think the pyramid weights, that Newt suggests, would soon loose their sharp edges after being retrieved up a pebbly beach a few dozen times.

For beach fishing in a strong tide, leads with breakaway wires seem to be the answer.

Hi Jim

As we talk there is progress. The chap who has taking on the task last told me he had to order a cutting head.

I did get some advice on how to make a temp mould but when I was asked to send my drawings and thoughts on how this should be done, a more permanent mould should become realistic. If and when it does materialise you will be the first to receive a 5oz, Pyramid Weight.

There still is some good folk out there as this is being done by someone I don't know

Cheers 4 Now

As my seasickness puts me off boat fishing, I shall donate it to Elton when he visits Weymouth on May 9th for trials.

I still think something could be achieved using the frog of a tilted London Brick!

Where is Alan Taylor?

Still here mate. When you first posted this topic I was away on holiday, I thought you were talking about the cone shaped ones that Davy Holt makes (2lb), if that won't hold bottom he just clips another 1lb of lead and slides it down the line. Five minutes later he decides to move :D

Alan, I thought it was going to bring out the entrprenur in you.

That's why I brought it back to the top now that you're back from your hols.

The idea is to cut down on the weight needed in strong tides.

John seems to think it a worthwhile project.

Is it the case everywhere, that the strongest tidal currents are in the regions of smallest tide range(rise and fall)?

Sounds like what some people out of Weymouth used to do to get a big common skate off the bottom!

Jim,

I can remember reading about these leads but for some reason I keep thinking that the wire in the lead was not the normal loop but a sort of bar with a bend at either end. Difficult for me to explain but the idea was that you lowered the weight into the water and it planed down, when you had a fish on the resistance of the fish would change the position of the clip on the "bar" so that it planed up.

As Salar pointed out, as there is no control over the antics of the lead in the water it has to be a no no on charter boats. Small boat fishing, say 4 well spread rods could make it interesting though.

Let me know how it goes.
