Fishing In The Pads

I often fish the edges of lilli pads with good results however, there are clear areas in the lilli pads where the larger carp splash. Given the correct equipment and with carp safety in mind, is there a rig you can recommend for fishing directly into a clear area surrounded by lilli pads?

The safest method I've found for fishing in, near or around lillies is the Sunken Float Method (Lift Rig) , which I happen to use for all of my stalking.

The Sunken Float Method is explained in this article..... http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/authors/gaffer03.htm

a nice safe rig in a pva bag would get it straight down to the bottom without catching on the stems etc. braid would cut through pads if you hook a good fish.

it depends on how dense the pads are as to weather its sensible to use this method.

common sense will prevail.

My best carp this year, a 17lb Ghostie, was caught from a small hole on a freelined chum mixer in the lillies.

The methods described by other posters are spot on but consider this :

There are different types of lillies.

Some have roots that are under the silt and the stalks up to the leaves are fairly fragile.

This means a heavy 10lb+ mono or braided line will cut through them with ease as you play a fish.

Others have roots above the silt upto and sometimes above midwater.

Others have very thick stalks up to the leaves.

It will help you if you can find out what type of stalks and roots the lillies you intend to fish are like.

My club only have and only plant weak stalked lillies in our waters incasr fish run into them.

I personally think that if you can avoid it you should - why take the risk? If however all else fails then the advice given is good. Step up the tackle to cope and don't be afraid to give the fish a good pull to try and get it out almost before it's realised what's going on.

now i don,t know how true this is but i was told about one method of fishin in the lillies is to tie up to a dozen stop knots up your line spaced apart say 10" and when the carp screams of the knots act like a saw cuttin through the lillies as anyone eles heard about this idea ? or could it be a wind up?

sorry strider ive not heard that one...one problem with that is all those knots in your line can't do it any good strengh wise, one resonable fish and that will break....good ole PVA bag will do the job

Strider, Brad, Stop Knots along a snagleader is/was used extensively by Dave Lane for fishing in, near or around lillies, and to great effect.

I'm not sure that I'd use that method, but he does, and he's caught a few more fish than I have.

Bear in mind though that each knot is a potential weak point in the line so you'd need to consider that when chosing a breaking strain.

And what about the scales that get ripped off as you drag the fish through the lillies?

I was brought up on stalking fish in lillies and it was ok until the fish started to get bigger (doubles+)but then we (that is a considerable number of anglers) stopped due to the damage.

LSA Sutton at Hone certainly had a rule of no fishing in the pads, due to the damage caused.

My advice will be, as you can guess, is find some other way of catching them.
