I'm cheap! so I use Daiwa Sensor 12lb. If it's good enough for a certain Mr. Jackson and the British record, it's more than good enough for little'ol me.

I tend to use a variety of lines.I mostly buy these in the US where they are much cheaper.I currently have bulk spools of Berkley big game, trilene XL. and XT.Suffix Tritanium and Maxima.I buy it by the mile and because it is cheap I change it frequently.I tend to favour Big Game and have never had any problems. It is interesting that there are relatively few lines available in the US but that all the new lines imported into this country under different names are mostly American. It seems to me that a lot of lines sold under different names are,as a dealer once said to me,"curiously similar".

By the way Angling Centre Derby sell bulk spools of Big Game (3000-4000 yards)fairly cheaply.I think you get 2 spools for the price of one.Try calling them if you like Big Game.Otherwise find a make you like and buy it as cheaply as you can and preferably in bulk and change it regularly.

Best wishes

You may find this piece by Jim Gibbinson from the articles section of interest, especially as it summarises bench test results from a lot of different lines: http://anglersnet.co.uk/authors/jim09.htm

For my own full field test of Pro Gold see http://anglersnet.co.uk/reviews/progold01.htm

I'd add that this was done on the 4.4 & 8lb breaking strains. I've subsequently used the 15lb for carp and pike and found it too springy for my taste, especially when fishing open bale arm. I now prefer Gold Label's Pro Clear in the heavy breaking strains. However, despite coming from the same supplier, note that it's rated differently to Pro Gold - the breaking strains are based on dry, unknotted values. See the field test on Pro Gold for a discussion of this.

Has anyone any other recommendations for a line for fishing open bail arm (yes, I still do often fish like this for carp, quite apart from pike). The line needs to have little "memory" and so not spring off the reel.

I had thought of braid and use it exclusivly for lure fishing, including at Wingham. However I understand it doesn't lend itself to rigs like sunken float paternosters as it doesn't slide as well as mono. Anyone tried braid for this?

I'm also not happy with its abrasion resistance and shear on sharp gravel bars - at least the braids I've tried to date. However, Newt has kindly sent me some Power Pro and I'll be trying this shortly for lure fishing. I might give it a go for ledgering as well if it stands up to lure fishing.
