Statement of the obvious?

David Cameron's utterances were made to his party faithful, admittedly. But what other option would he have, given the situation he'd inherited.?

Like the worst excesses of 'New' Labour, it's a triumph of soundbite politics.

Conservative leader David Cameron is to say he plans to "replace Labour's spendaholic government with a new government of thrift".

Mr Cameron will tell his party's spring forum in Gloucestershire later that cutting wasteful spending will not be enough to save the UK's finances.

What is needed is a "complete change of direction" across government and the public sector, he will say.

Alan, this has been the case for yonks - Labour in power spend what their heart, not head, says - leaving little or nothing to the Tories to inherit. Then when they come into power and start a recovery plan, Labour tell the country that the Tories are at it again - being heartless to the nation!!

Now watch the Labourites jump on this and tell me I'm wrong!!

The point I was making was that anyone with half a brain understood that austerity, an ispiration this country has lacked for more than a generation - or Divine intervention would be required to restore the economy to health...so why the need to make a point? Have we really become that stupid?

You said 'heartless to the nation' - I'd say that this is exactly what 'New' Labour have been to certain sections of the population, so don't expect the morale high ground to be claimed convincingly or without irony.

Alan, unfortunately I read the news comment letters on teletext and there are STILL (although not as many letters) statements saying that Labour are doing a brilliant job, Darling produced a magnificent budget, Brown is the best PM we have ever had, etc.!

...and this is exactly what political activists do. You can post as you wish there without declaring political allegiance, although it would be obvious from the tenor of what's being said.

Quite apart from which, just because someone expresses an opinion, you don't have to agree with it!

Errrr.... Yes.

If you disagree, think about the result of the last election.

I beg to differ....there was no credible opposition at the last 3 elections!

But, I can see where yo're coming from.

And there is still no credible opposition.

The major parties have morphed into various shades of the same colour.

The policies only different sides of the same coin.

I don't think any party would be too upset to lose an election in the present economic climate.

The trouble is, John, we don't have any credible government and haven't had one for 15 years!
