Attempted Scams

We have been getting emails, all with attachments, purporting to come from btopenworld.

 

The messages vary

 

"Your computer has been successfully updated"

 

"Your service contract has expired"

 

"There is a problem with your password"

 

"There are problems with your emails"

 

The one thing they have in common is an attachment, which you are invited to open, as it will "explain the action you need to take".

 

Needless to say, we have not opened the attachments.

 

I hope nobody here would fall for this apparently plausible scam.

 

Btopenworld do NOT send emails with attachments, hence the above are all phony.

 

Anyone else getting them?

Because I own a lot of different domain names, I am getting hundreds of these a day.

 

A lot of the recent ones seem to relate to an email account that has been violated/is about to expire.

 

They come from addresses such as hostmaster@, postmaster@, webmaster@, etc.

 

As all of those addresses would be me, I kinda twigged they were false

 

I had a client ring me up about one, as he got one to his domain that I look after. Luckily, I was able to stop him in time. He's only just 'recovered' from one very nasty virus!

 

It's getting so that decent people can't use the internet. I think it's such a shame and a waste of such a valuable resource.

i'm surprised they are getting through BTYAHOO's spam filter :confused: i get plenty in the "bulk" folder on the mail section of the said main site but none get as far as my P.C. :confused:

P.S. its ALWAYS worth a search of the bulk folder now and again i have found a couple of kosher emails in there that shouldnt be

Chesters, Same with me, I use Yahoo, very rarely does a Spam mail get into my inbox....usually it goes to bulk.....

I use Zone Alarm, AVG anti-virus and a Spyware checker. As long a you have all 3 updated on a daily basis, you shouldn't have any bother with such garbage. I get the odd bit of junk but it's usually unwarranted and recognisable right away.

Same here. The messages I refer to went to bulk ... should have made that clear in the first place - sorry.

I had to turn my bulk folder off, as too many legit emails were getting sent there, even after telling them umpteen times that they were legit

I use Mailwasher and that sorts the chaff from the wheat before I download my emails.

none of the packages you mention are anything to do with spam though andy.

Both Zone Alarm and AVG have junk mail filters and the Spyware program helps prevent folk getting your E-mail address. Do they not?
