Norton Antivirus

I bought Norton's Antivirus/Sys-Sec package 11 months ago. It slows the PC's launch to a crawl (7 minutes - I kid you not) but otherwise, it's done pretty much what it said on the tin - Until now !

I now get the subscription renewal prompt every time I launch IE which is annoying but understandable.

What really ticks me off is the fact that having paid for 12 months worth of subscription, it is now refusing to allow me to run "Live Update" unless I re-subscribe.

If I pay for a year's cover, I expect a years cover, not 11 months of cover and a month where new virus's can probably trash my system. Is that so unreasonable ?

Can anyone recomend an alternative ? Norton can stick their renewal where the sun don't shine.

Personally I'd get in touch with Norton, but whether they'd do anything is another thing

I've always used Norton, i've had a few probs with their firewall, but nothing too serious.

McFree is quite good I hear, never tried it tho.

20 quid for a year's subscription?!! Cheeky swines, that's not much less than I paid for the software. I'll probably end up changing to a different AV package entirely since I've found that Norton doesn't play nicely with Visual Sourcesafe.

Ken,

I use Avast click here

Is free of charge for home use, has regular virus updates (daily or more as best I can tell) and comes complete with just about everything that Norton does.

Is a simply fantastic product that has kept my PC virus free since I have had it.

Give it a try. I'm sure you won't be dissapointed.

You do have to re-register each year, but that is free also :)

Ken,

Many people here have given up with Norton and uninstalleed it.

There are free products on the net that work just as well AVG Anti-Vitus is recommended by a lot of folk here.

If you don't fancy using the Windows XP firewall, many people here like Zonealarm firewall

Both of these products are free and there are other products available, this subject has been covered quite well in the Technical Help Forum in the past, might be worth a search.

an important feature that is missing from Windows firewall (in my opinion anyway) is any protection from outgoing traffic. I want to know if a programme is trying to send out some data packets without my permission.

For that reason I use Kerio personal firewall as a software firewall on each of my pc's, as well as my nice new shiny dedicated firewall/gateway.

Kerio ( kerio.co.uk ), and Sygate ( sygate.com ) are my 2 firewalls of choice, I just don't like zonealarm, but many others do.

And AVG free is excellent - if you prefer to pay for software then the AVG / Kerio package is very good at £30
