I haven't seen an Eel like that for many years, nothing like the annoying little bootlaces that I've caught in the past. What a smashing fish Den. ... and on plastic....was one of them a piece of yellow sponge soaked in corn oil??? or was it just plain soft plastic corn??

Stop teasing and spill the beans!

Come on Den, I'm away fishing for a few days and will not find out until next week. I'm not such a tackle tart that I bring a lap top with me :D

I could be missing out on some top eel tips.

I could be missing out on some top eel tips.

Just for now, it was 3 grains of yellow plastic corn, side hooked (saddle backed) on a No 2 super specialist "floating" an inch above a method feeder,. The hooklink held in place with a 1/4" 0f catapult elastic, so it only pulled free when a fish has hooked/pricked itself.Cast into a fairly weedy area (I didn't feel the feeder hit bottom) Caught 2 large D/F carp, 1 tench about 4 lbs and 1 Rudd. 12 other carpers blanked :) :)

I will add a pic in a few minutes..bear with me :) Bare feeder..

Thats a top mixed bag by any ones standard - Good fishing. May have to try that method.

I wonder what the eel thought of it, you may have come up with a new method. The predator boys will be stocking up on plastic corn :D

I like this "general" specimen aproach of yours Den.It certainly doesnt stop you catching carp as your past couple of seasons captures has shown! Much better to get some good specimens of other fish along the way.Shame more "carp anglers" didnt adopt this veiw.Im sure they would have more fun!

If I try it I think that I may try a lighter aproach and just accept that Im going to be a bit undergunned when it comes to size of feeder/distance I can cast it or when a big carp comes along.Do you (obviously water depending) think this is feasable or is the distance/size of feeder crucial?

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Budgie (and all :) ) It is a long story of try..test..try again..test again....over a period of weeks and months.

As in all things fishing, nothing is certain, and as I am "on my own" with these ideas I often THINK I get it wrong and change things.

Over the last few months I have changed the basic thinking behind this setup, so instead of tying the 8" hooklink in place with pva, which gives the fish a chance to suck it off the feeder, I now keep it in place witha bit of catapult elastic. This only comes free when the fish has already pricked/hooked itself. It also ensures that the hook stays where I want it, and is not pulled about by tiddlers

I have had some startling results, turning days of twitches into days of catching fish. The catches increased (up to 20+ a day) as I reduced the hook size (down to No8 ) but every time I hooked (?) a "big fish" it came off. Yes I landed a couple, but several more simply "came off"

So I decided to go the other way and offer a wide gape hook, hoping to get a better hookhold in the bigger fish. Bear in mind there is only an inch of link above the feeder. So far it has worked OK, the hook stays in place, it never tangles and ...a big plus here..............it works in weed. For me, that is a huge boost in confidence, I used to hate weed.

The feed is pretty stiff/sticky, designed to stay in place and survive a fair bit of time under attack from the Rudd, it is very often still in the feeder after landing a fish.

Regarding the weight, 2 1/2 oz empty is simply the weight they come from the mould, but are heavy enough to act as a bolt to set the hook, I have just weighed a loaded feeder and it weighs a fraction over 4 oz :) no wonder it flys out :)

Short hooklink straight off the lead is nothing new, pulling the hooklink back in to the feeder is old hat to many matchmen, feeders which land the same way up are common these days. Stiff mix in the centre of the feeder is standard practise when bream fishing etc, but I am not sure how many combine all these thoughts. Certainly no one on the lakes I fish do anything like it :)
