It takes a lot to stop anglers at least trying to fish. I fished right through the '62/'63 winter when the ice in some places was 14" thick. We fished near power stations where there was still open water. A year after we arrived in Oz, Perth was hit by a cyclone and so, stupidly perhaps, I drove to a local beach to watch the ocean. It was impressive and as we watched, a car with rods on the roof rack pulled in beside us. The driver got out, looked at the sea, came round to my window and said, "You can't bloody fish in that", got back into his car and drove off. I think that the only weather I ever saw that stopped all anglers in my area at the time was, "The Storm of the Century" in 1953. My parents took us down to the beach where we stood and watched the waves smash the middle out of the local breakwater and there wasn't an angler to be seen that day. I know that there will be someone ready to tell me that there have been more powerful storms than that but when it came to damage and loss of over 2000 lives in East Anglia and Holland it is still one of the worst storms ever to hit the UK. I have fished in weather at the other end of the scale here and well remember one day when the shade temperature was nearly 50C. Two friends of mine and I were out in an aluminium boat. You could not touch any of the metal work without burning yourself. We stuck to trolling a lot of the time but frequently threw ourselves over board into an ocean that felt cool at 30C.

When you do the recce - can you let me know the state of the Kennet up the West Berkshire end? I'm thinking of a possible trip on Monday - I would appreciate the heads up on the River conditions before I commit myself.

Spent the day on a water 'above Newbury', river is still low - though not as bare as it has been. A little coloured but still immeniently fishable - you cetainly wouldn't think we'd had nearly 2 inches of rain since last Thursday....

Thanks Chris - that's most helpful. As there is a lull in the weather I'm off to the Kennet tomorrow! Chub, barbel and perch are on the cards if I can remember what to do, it's nearly a month since I last went out. Wether is gouing to get bad again later in the week.

I was thinking of Speen Moors in December - will the chub be playing?

Oh yes - and if they're not the perch should be - my two biggest stripeys from SM were both December fish....
