Typical of Roy Webster he has missed a very important fact, the fact that the EA have said they will not prosecute anyone for putting zander back, anywhere in the country.

 

It's good that anglers will not face prosecution for returning Zander, but I wonder what the point is of the new National Fisheries Bylaws if it does not include a species such as the Zander which has now established itself in our waters. By not protecting the Zander they are basically declaring open season on them.

 

I believe Zander are supposed to taste quiet nice. I have no wish to try this out, but by classifying them as aliens without the protection granted to natives its giving the green light to those who wish to fish for the pot to take them in large numbers. Not that I believe the new bylaws will make any difference to the species or amounts of fish being taken, but I can see no reason why this suppossed protection should not include the Zander.

It's all a very good reason not to introduce the new legislation!

 

Any fish not on the list of fish "protected by the EA" is potentially open to targeting by people who fancy a decent fish supper (me included).

 

As for carp, well, there's another awkward one. They are classed by the conservation bodies as non-native (no time limit for species that were brought here by man since the last ice age). The EA might try and prosecute you for taking one but what happens when you get DEFRA, NE and the JNCC professional witnesses to back you up in court because the EA got it wrong when they didn't list carp as non-natives?

 

A ridiculous, badly thought out piece of legislation with more holes in it than a swimfeeder. It's going to cause more bad feeling between anglers than the previous eat what you catch legislation........all backed by your friendly "national governing body" that represent the interests of all anglers of course

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

I think you are right, it will be interesting to see what happens if and when they do try to prosecute some one.

 

But I fear for the poor little Zander being targeted for catch and take. If your not on the list your fair game. I only caught my first Zander in October and do not want to see them go into decline when I have just got into fishing for them.

I don't think you need worry, in the days when Zander first spread through the fens, there was an Angling press campaign that said "Zanders will eat ALL our silver fish" (just like the current otter scare)

 

Certain people then spent a lot of time and energy catching Zander by rod and line, by traps, by netting, and knocking them on the head.

 

Result, 40-odd years later. Zander still there Silver fish still there.

I've seen it somewhere as well Elton, I'll have a dig around, but I don't find the EA site easy to navigate.

 

 

I can't see what all the fuss is about, they talk like everyone who fishes for zander are now going to hit them on the head. It's the same 'argument that anglers shouldn't be able to take fish to eat, because "if everyone did it it there would be no fish left". I'm sick of hearing this same stupid reply. whenever I've said we should retain the right to take fish.

 

I'm still waiting for an answer from Adrian Taylor as to why carp, (arguably one of the most prolific fish in our waters) should be afforded more protection than the eel, which we are told is on the verge of extinction.

This whole stupid, ill thought out, meaningless and unenforceable legislation, is doing more damage to angling unity than anything I've known before. I even asked Adrian Taylor if that was it's purpose.

Hi John, you might have to wait for a while, he's taken leave (of his senses?) until the 22nd of this month apparently. Oh well, must dash and try and catch and eat some of the fish I've never tasted before it becomes a criminal offence to eat fish that nobody owns but we pay a lot of money to go and catch B)
