At the moment the only thing i can find that meets criteria are the drennan tench/bream distance specialist. Anyone think of another rod that matches these.

Requirements 1.75- 2lbs test

12ft

tip action / fast taper

everytime i catch a fish i'm lucky when i blank i'm a hopeless angler.

Have a look on the Harrison Advanced Rods website, should be something on there to meet your needs.

Terry, I went round the houses with exactly that criteria, looking at all sorts of rods. In the end I got the very rods you mentioned (the 1.75lb tc ones). Made for exactly the type of fishing I think you want them for. I think you'll struggle to find anything better. Barbel rods don't work properly (not accurate enough for casting, too fine in the tip, won't punch a lead through a stiff side wind) and it's almost impossible to get carp rods that light any more.

There was definitely a gap for this kind of big pit tench and bream fishing, and Drennan filled it perfectly, in my opinion.

Edit: just looked at the rods Lutra linked to - very nice! I love light Daiwa carp rods (I have a pair of powermesh carp rods in 2.25lb tc) but they tend to be quite soft in action and not very good for accurate casting. I can cast further and much more accurately with my 1.75lb tc Drennans than the 2.25lb tc Daiwas. On big, windy pits full of bars, being able to drop a bait where you want it through a big side wind without recasting half a dozen times is a massive benefit!

Which is why i would just get some 2.5 or even 2.75 tc carp rods at half the price. With the same hook length you've been using for breaming (which is what i use as well when using bolt rigs for bream) and a 2.75tc carp rod i would fancy my chances against any fish (teeth aside) that swims in freshwater in this country.

For big water bream fishing with bolt rigs a 1.75t or 2lb tc just seem pointless to me.

I can't see any reason to go above 1.75lb tc personally. But it's not just tc, it's action too. I suppose it comes down to whether you want one set of rods to do everything, or a set specific to one or maybe two waters.

Terry, if you can wait that long, the Wingham fish-in would be the perfect time to check out lots of rods and see which you prefer?

Sorry Anderoo, but it just seems silly to fish on big waters with a rig that would be a home on a carp rod and use a rod that you can only get 80 yrds out of and less into a good wind. Mine you i do suspect some of you distance and side wind problems might be down to your rig.

I have just purchased a pair of the 12ft Shimano Beastmaster All Rounder Rods 1.75 TC from Leslies of Luton for £69.99 each. For similar fishing that you may be doing. Unfortunatly as I have not pressed them in to service yet I can't provide much information, but I am a big fan of the Beastmaster range, just wish they had a better name.

Hi All,

I was also looking at purchasing a 2nd rod (eventually), mainly to ledger for tench whilst I float fish the margins. My local tackle shop suggested a 1.75tc Middy rod - Unfortunatly I cant remember the exact model, was about £70, anyone have any experience with these, are they a good alternative?

Cheers,

Craig
