New rod

Fishing at extreme range isn't a tactic I rely on, so the ability to do so wasn't a priority in choosing it, but provided I could cast far enough with it I would much rather fish with the Drennan tench & bream rods than with a 2.75lb TC carp rod. I would just worry that a rod like that is going down the road of beachcasting, which tends towards the art of projecting a lead a long way with a dedicated casting tool, followed by the chore of winching fish in with it.

Its not a tactic i like to employ myself, but on some natural waters I've fished it can be a long cast to find deeper water which is always a good place to look late in the season.

From reading your post Steve, you almost sound like the first person ive heard of that go's bream fishing for their spirited fight. :)

More interested in the tench side, to be honest :)

I do think that it's a shame for any species, though, if the demands of distance casting mean using tackle which would otherwise be too heavy.

You might be interested to know that 'Mr Bream' at a certain lake (the guy who catches the bream and who had the 18lber) uses any old crappy barbel rods. He said to me that the rod makes no difference - spod and marker rods and reels are very important to spend some money on and get right, as you're casting them dozens of times. The bream rods you're casting once. And any old rod will reel a bream in, even if it's a record.

(He is a much better caster than me though!)

guessing i have a lot to learn. Just thinking along the lines of making my life easier. Knowing i might need to cast 70 yds accurately. The rods will be used elsewhere aswell doing the same kind of thing.

At the moment its a decision between the specialist distance or the standard. I dont really want to go down the road of full blown carp rods as in my mind beyond about 70yds casting to within the size of a dustbin lid is virtually impossible anyway. I listen to the carp anglers telling me how they cast 15o yds accurately all the time. But as during the winter i spend most of my time targetting cod of our beaches with decent beach casters i know half the time i'm barely reaching 150 yds and i'm just trying to cast straight out rather than to a specific target.

everytime i catch a fish i'm lucky when i blank i'm a hopeless angler.

No it doesn't have to mean that, well not if the rules allow bait boats. :o Which would mean you could even catch at 300 yards using a nice soft float rod and a centrepin if you like. :)

Hi Terry,

I know that a few of the guys in the Tenchfishers use the new Drennan Tench and Bream rods and are very impressed with them. Me? I use Korum twin tips - 1.75 lb TC and 2.2lb TC - and can honestly say they have done everything I've asked of them. The 1.75 tips are great for flinging maggot and open ended feeders to the horizon and the 2.2 tips are very capable at launching method feeders 60+yds. I had my doubts about using a butt section with two different tips but they work! I| even had a 30+lb mud pig on 10lb line on one so they have the power and flexibilty to handle almost anything that swims in UK waters.

At the end of the day though, you have to decide. There are a lot of reasonable rods out there and as many opinions too. But you'll know when you pick the right rod up. It'll feel right for you.

Regards,

Steve C.

I dont think you will be dissapointed with them TT.Drennan (when they get the spline alignment right!) Make very good rods.A set of their first Pike rods are among the very few rods that Ive had for field testing and not only kept but still use!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!
