New rod

I don't have distance and side wind problems any more :) But more importantly I don't have accuracy problems any more either, which I did when I was using the heavier carp rods (higher tc but too soft in action).

I don't think I fish at the sort of distances you do though, Lutra.

Rather than hijack another thread i'm looking for a set of 3 rods.

At the moment the only thing i can find that meets criteria are the drennan tench/bream distance specialist. Anyone think of another rod that matches these.

Requirements 1.75- 2lbs test

12ft

tip action / fast taper

Terry I spent 2 years trying to find the right rod for this, Drennan are the only rod makers that make a rod for this type of work, everything else is an avon/barbel rod or a carp rod. The problem I found is the light carp rods are built for 'playing fish' and close range and therefore are not good casting tools.

I now have the Drennan 2lbTC ones! I got these because I wanted them for distance work as I already have rods that cover short medium range work. I love them they are perfect, somehow combining stiffness and power when casting with softness when playing fish under the rod tip. I also have a pair of 1.5TC Diawa rods, nothing like them is made anymore by Daiwa but they are a little like the Drennan 2lb ones I just mentioned. These are good for short to medium range. Before I got the Drennans I got a second-hand pair of Daiwa 1.75TC barbel rods (I didn't want to spend £200 on the Drennan ones), there weren't very good, the tips are too soft for casting and the rings are too small. I know have 2 butt sections, 1 tip section and a handful of carbon shards after one of the rods exploded on a relatively short cast, I got the Drennan ones after that.

I think if you can afford it, get the Drennan ones, if not get some second-hand light carp/heavy barbel rods and if they explode you haven't lost too much cash.

I am very very tempted to buy the 1.75TC Drennan ones now but I don't really need them and it would probably end in divorce but I DO WANT THEM!

Rich

p.s. if you want to see the rods in the flesh I'm sure we can arrange a rod waggling session over a pint somewhere half way between Oxford and you....

p.p.s here is ther topic I started on the same subject http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/forums/175-TC-...rod-t82335.html

If I had had a choice I would have gone for the Drennan rods as well. I use the Wychwood ones simply as Andrew got me some after getting fed up of being embarrassed by my old tatty Tricast's! He had got some and I commented that I thought they were good value for money so he got me some! Ive a good brother!

You can pick them up quite cheap (and often near as damn it unused/new) for under £30.They've done every thing Ive asked of them so far ie fishing straight leads up to around 75m and chucking method feeders up to around 45-50m max.If I need to go further then I will simply switch to carp rods as Brian says.

I would have prepared the Drennan's as after having tried them they have (IMO) a more versatile action. One thing I would say though is check that the rings are correctly aligned with the spline as Ive had a few Drennan rods that weren't.In light sizes it really makes them nasty to cast with.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Fishing at extreme range isn't a tactic I rely on, so the ability to do so wasn't a priority in choosing it, but provided I could cast far enough with it I would much rather fish with the Drennan tench & bream rods than with a 2.75lb TC carp rod. I would just worry that a rod like that is going down the road of beachcasting, which tends towards the art of projecting a lead a long way with a dedicated casting tool, followed by the chore of winching fish in with it.

Which Wychwood rods are you using? I have one of the 1.75lb multi-tip barbel rods (one normal tip, one quiver) and I was thinking about buying some additional ones if I can find them (possibly without the quiver tip?) to start fishing longer sessions for carp/tench/bream.

Funny enough i'm not a lover of the new drennan tench/bream rods or their barbel rods come to that. I have a pair of shimano diaflash rods in 2lb test and in my opinion they're a superiour rod being the ultimate in casting and fishplaying tools.

You might be interested to know that 'Mr Bream' at a certain lake (the guy who catches the bream and who had the 18lber) uses any old crappy barbel rods. He said to me that the rod makes no difference - spod and marker rods and reels are very important to spend some money on and get right, as you're casting them dozens of times. The bream rods you're casting once. And any old rod will reel a bream in, even if it's a record.

(He is a much better caster than me though!)
