My grandson is just 15 and he loves his fishing. He gets the mickey taken at school for this very reason, because he is not interested in play stations or hanging about on the streets. I know where I would rather he be. People make fun because you are different. Irene.

Hi, what is your name?

Cyril

And what do you do in your spare time, Cyril?

Well, I am slightly embarrassed to say.

Go on, tell us.

OK, I like to go fishing.....an

(howls of laughter), that's a bit sad isn't it?

I was going to say that when I'm not fishing I also enjoy cage-fighting!!!

I have to admit I generally avoid telling people about my fishing. I don't care about whether they think I'm sad or not (I already know the answer to that!) but I really hate the arguments over ethics. The last time this happened was in a restaurant with a bunch of people, and fishing came up. Someone immediately got pretty angry and said, there's nothing you could ever say to me to make me think fishing for pleasure isn't horrible and cruel. A couple of others murmered agreement. (She happened to be eating a non-free range chicken at the time  ).

I can just do without it. I can argue my corner easily enough but it still ruins a nice evening!

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

I preferred it when the general public thought of anglers as being strange, slightly eccentric, but harmless individuals, who disappeared at ungodly hours to spend a boring day by the water.

That was before the 'powers that be' decided that we needed more publicity, and media attention, which in turn brought us more into the sights of those less than enthusiastic about angling.

I have a few veggies in my family, and a couple of vegans as close friends. They have known me for so long that my angling activities don't cause a problem, (or if it does, they haven't said so to my face :) ).

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

I think it's just the image that people who know nothing about angling see on TV and they draw sterotypes from that. The fisherman is often a lowly extra in the back ground of dire soaps or gritty kitchen sink dramas. It's all ways some old man hunched over a rod sitting on a striped garden chair or one of those stool come back packs on the tow path of some urban getto canal path or park lake. Often doing one of the below.

1, Looking very sad and lonely. (Almost like he has been forced in to it and not doing it though choice. HE HAS, he is an extra with allusions of grandeur. He thinks he is a good actor and all he needs is one good break, but the only part he can get is paedo bloke playing with his rod by the canal. Is it no wonder he looks so sad and dejected.

2. Looking very creepy, the sort of chap parents would herd children away from.

3. Eating a sandwich.

4. Catching a very tiny fish or not catching any fish at all.

5. Pouring a drink from a tartan flask.

The above does not show in any way how fishing can be exciting, relaxing, interesting or just plain fun.

I think other then fly fishing for game fish "the preserve of the rich only on TV" most people think that the only fishing the rest of the country does is canel fishing for tiddlers. My non-fishing friends are stunned when they see pictures of the big fish I have caught or the nice places that fishing takes me too.
