Plenty of turtles in London lakes. Probably released after the 'Ninja turtle' craze died a death...

 

Wandered along the banks of a lake in inner city Hackney recently doing a bit of fish spotting but it turned into a bit of turtle spotting...

 

Friends in other parts of London have also confirmed that they've spotted turtles in abundance.

 

Not sure about 57lb snapping turtles though...

I don't know what it's like now, but the lakes in Clissold Park in Stoke Newington used to be absolutely full of them.

The used to be a gravel pit near to Kings Lynn that was full of them, this was way before the ninja turtle rage

I was fishing on a local lake about 2 years ago and a Turtle the size of a dinnerplate surfaced about 2 feet from my keepnet.

I tried to catch it and remove it from the water with my landing net but it vanished as quickly as it appeared.

I suppose that being Reptiles gives them an advantage in that they can technically hibernate and so survive all but the most sever winters.

One of our club lakes used to have a fairly substantial terrapin in it - not seen it for a few years so presume it didn't make it through a winter...

I think that Terrapins struggle with our Winters. However, with climate change maybe they will become a common feature?

IMO I hope not.
