Why 'Avon tops' & 'Quiver tips'?

Yes they are glued on but it doesn't take a lot of heat to break down the glue and then they slide off easily the older J.W rods have the carbon blank dolly butted into a fibreglass handle and that also comes apart easily enough so the job isn't usually that hard I did mine years ago best thing I ever did to that rod!

minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which

holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd

by the clean end"

Hello Alan, :)

It's me again, Heritulus, & I bet you're really pleased to hear my voice once more??? <_<

I've just been kicked out of the 'Non-Fishing Chat' Health & Safety debate by a terminator, :) sorry moderator, called Newt, any idea who the chap is? Getting a bit sick I am of such as the HSE & the Enviroment Agency coming over strong, they're a bit too autocratic for my taste & when I read some of the 'I'm for them both' waffle <_< I have a tendency to go a tad over the top. But, no offence intended.

Regards,

Mr H :)

With all due respect to Newt, he does sometimes misjudge (in my opinion) the free speech (and allegedly slanderous humour) of UK nationals when compared with the alternative? that rules in the good ole US of A! Then again I didn't read your posts!

He is a Yank (lives in the sarth?) but he's ok really

As for 'Avon' tips and 'quiver' tips, well, names put onto modern rods that are rather arbitrary in my opinion. Try a Croft 'Avon' or similar to a modern 'Avon' and you'll see what I mean....rather like classifying a Kawasaki four cylinder bike along with a Triumph twin as 'classics'. Both are but, neither get close to each other in terms of handling and performance!

As Steve said, an Avon is closer to a 'stepped up' float rod (but equally suitable for ledgering) but, that depends on your style of fishing. Personally I use 'Avon' rods for medium/heavy ledgering (but then again I am talking cane here!). When I used to use a quiver tip in the 70s when it was all the rage, the sensitivity of a small diameter solid glass tip on the end of a hollow glass rod could be very useful. My experience with carbon rods suggests that a glass quiver tip for bite detection is an essential requirement if you are so inclined to use such a device for freshwater angling!

Odd how the built in glass tip on carbon boat rods is becoming de rigeur as regards bite detection!

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!

The problem with the older Wilson rod is it only has one spliced in quiver tip so you can't swap tips for different flows/conditions/fish etc so your stuck with the quite heavy tip. Modern rods have three or more push in tips enableing better bit detection.

Some of the JW rods that came with spliced in tips also came with an Avon top with a threaded tip eye which meant you could use a screw in swing tip. Which when it comes to detecting shy sensitive bites will beat any quiver tip Ive tried.

Yeah Brian, you can also screw in quiver tips. I got the wilson specialist rod which has the tip eye with the threaded tip eye for the very same. I know they will catch fish just like any otherrod but I don't think they're the best of quality. I don't know about the latest rovex rods they may be better quality.

Depends how you define quality really Ian. Most JW rod owners I come across seem to have caught some nice fish and I don't hear to many of them saying it broke or fell to bits.
