Why handmade centrepins are expensive

For anyone interested, the link below gives a good insight into what goes in to the making of a hand built reel as opposed to a CNC massed produced alternative. If you equate the manufacturing time to an hourly rate then they represent excellent value. This is not about how good one is compared to the other but just to give an insight in to what goes in to making one and why the costs seem high. If for example a reel cost £450 and took 30 hours to make then an all in rate of £15 per hour including materials and running the equipent used puts it into perspective.

I was watching and noted that he states he has made the reel with a larger arbor so less backing line is needed.

Do you put backing line on a CP?

Surely there is no requirement to fill the spool, in fact I have often wondered why the make the spool so deep.

Maybe you CPers can enlighten :)

Let's agree to respect each others views, no matter how wrong yours may be.

its a american /canadian thing ,they apply the same rules you would with a open faced & or flyfishing reel of filling your spool too near the rim ,and tend too fish with 100m of mainline + backing ,with the backing being your reserve ,as they fish with much heavier floats and fish for steelhead salmon which likes too run hard .

there is how ever a case for using backing (just enough too cover the drum's face) when using braid with a solid drumed spool (like the okuma's) as no matter how tight you tie on braid ,it will slip on a solid smooth surface .where as mono doesn't so you put enough too cover the spool on first too provide grip .

of the three casts ,shown the Bc (bait/beach caster) is one most in uk haven't tried ,its great for lobbing heavy weights like ledgers ,but useless for litewieght floats we use in general over here .and yes 100m is easily achievable but you need a least 1/2 -3/4 oz on .or 8/9 ssg loafer .takes a little practice like any cast too get the timming of release too suite you .I've never found a use for it yet ,in about five years since i first saw it on quest .

I'm still in regular - ie daily (!!) contact with Glenn through the IAC. His offices were wiped out by the Buncefield Oil Terminal blast - would have been killed if it hadn't happened on a Sunday morning. Will point this thread at him and see if he'll pop in to say hello!

the thing with hand made reels is you know how much work goes into one ,because its made by some guy in his shed ,and we can all relate how precious little time we're allowed for our "Me Time ,in our sheds" ,when there loads of diy and other jobs accumulating ,waiting for the next bank holiday to arrive .

The biggest problem is having the equipent that is accurate enough to be able to make the parts. Fortunayely I now have the turning and milling capability, just need to be able to index accurately on a rotary table then I can have a go at making one. Good project for the winter methinks.
