Reel Life

Like many of you I'm sure you've been sent a copy of this by the EA. (You should have been sent one if you bought a licence last year )

Some interesting stats quoted such as...

Annual spend from freshwater anglers; £2.5Bn of which 80% is from coarse anglers.

Value of fishing rights in England and Wales; £3.0Bn

Days spent angling; 22Million of which 13M was on still-water fisheries.

Most popular species; Carp.

They also claim a high level of interest on angling "One in six of the population has been freshwater fishing in the previous 2 years or were interested in going in the future - that's seven million people!" (So does that mean there are 6 Million licence dodgers! :D )

So does this represent a 'healthy' outlook for the sport?

How much does sea angling add to the economy? And what about the Scottish angler and fishing rights north of the border? - they must be worth a bob or two!!!

it also said in reel life that to cut costs, they would only send out one copy of the mag, regardless of how many anglers there where in said licence holders household, going on this they claim to have sent out about 800,000, now say each houshold has two licence holders, thats still nowhere near the claimed amount of anglers in the uk.

Chris,

Whilst interesting reading I'm not sure how accurate their statistics can be when they only interviewed 2600 people. Mind you it was nice to get something back and there is some useful stuff contained therein.

Rob.

P.S. As far as cost savings go, they still managed to send both my licences separately (I bought them online)

If they profiled the sample accurately it's actually quite a large sample - about twice as large a sample that someone like Gallup would use for predicting General Election results.

But I AM remind of the famous quote (was it by Churchill?)..

'There are lies, damned lies and statistics!'

I must admit to have been a little disapointed inthis issue. Not sure what to expect, but thought it was a bit minimal and playing lip service to licence holders. What are your thoughts?

i dont know how much they are to produce and post (are they sponsored wholly by the adverts) maybe if a cost was involved maybe it could be better spent elsewhere?

Maybe the money would be better spent sending NEW licence holders a basic guide to fishing. This could include a copy of the SACN charter and other stuff to help a newcomer fish safely and unobtrusively. The self-congratulatory gubbins that is put in Reel Life could be handled by AM & AT.
