Fixed Spool vs Mulitplier

Tim & Newt, I agree with you 100% multiplier outfits with its superior line pickup and overall balance compared to fixed spool reels are much better in combination with lures requiring a jerky retrieve i.e. soft plastic jigs, soft plastic jerkbaits and hard jerkbaits.

Personally, I also prefer multiplier outfits when fishing deep diving crankbaits due to the unparalleled contact with the bait (you can instantly feel when the diving vane are bumping over structure or snags) and their superior cranking power compared to their minute size and weight.

The only applications where I still use spinning reels are when throwing around small inline spinners (the spinning blade catches a lot of air making it difficult to cast) fishing for Brown Trout or Sea Trout back in Norway. However, that is a totally different style of fishing where we use very, very long light spinning rods (9.5 to 12 feet) that is not commercially available here in the UK.

'I really, really don’t understand where these assumptions that you can’t use multipliers for light lures are coming from.'

From my own experiences with Multis and little lures Vidar. Tell you what though, next time we're out together I'll bring along some of my ultra lite lures, and you can show me how to cast them with a multiplier.

Newt:

Steve - maybe we can have some sort of fun lure casting comp?

No problem!

'Not a generalisation, Slodger. As I said, for pike, not for species requiring the smallest of lures.'

However the premise of the thread was a query regarding lure fishing in general Peter??

I've also got an Eon Pro, and if you tried casting some of my lighter lures on it I'm afraid you'd end up with a hook in your trouser leg!

Will be more than pleased to do that :):)

I also have an ABU Eon Pro and it is a very good reel with an extremely free running spool that spins almost forever when flicked.

However, it is not an ideal multiplier for ultra light lures as the spool are far, far to heavy and requires too much energy to start spinning, which of course in conjunction with light lures is not very clever.

As I mentioned before throwing light lures (1/8 to 5/16oz) requires relatively specialised multipliers and the by far best available straight from the box is the Daiwa Liberto Pixy.

I’m the proud owner of a ZPI super-tuned version of it and it is a fantastic piece of kit.

Peter,

Yes, I've several UL rods. I'd probably couple the Sport with a Berkeley Performa rated 1/8-3/8 ozs. And it's currently loaded with 10 b/s braid.

I agree with Vidar's comments above re the Eon. The take off speed is way too slow for use with UL lures, this causes an exaggerated casting action, which I find limits accuracy with the lures of 1/8ozs and less.

If Vidar says there are Multis capable of casting true UL lures, then I'm happy to concede. I don't think I know a more 'Lure tackle market aware' angler. He's also an awful Tackle Tart!! :D:D
