Warm Waterproof jacket

I have been given a budget by 'er indoors of about £100 to spend on a jacket as my Christmas present. I want a warm one, that is wind (external ;) )and water proof, camo not essential. I have a quick look at the Pro Logic and the Deim. Does anyone have experience of any good or bad ones. I must add that it will be occasional use rather than 24/7

The two best times to go fishing are when it's raining and when it's not

A Barbour jacket. Best fishing jacket I ever had. Lasted for years, kept the wind and rain out and I looked like a proper angler. You also decide how much clothing to wear under it so it's not just for the worstest weather.

Just need a repair kit, wax and a hair-dryer to keep it going for donkeys.

I reckon I need another one.

No experience with those two but I can assure you that the sundridge arctic range are fantastic. I have the IQ Artic two piece suit and it is the warmest thing I have ever worn. You can wear a t-shirt under it in winter and still be toasty. It kept me properly warm in -3 conditions on the river last new years day/night. Fully waterproof with plenty of pockets and very comfortable. It gets my vote everytime and if I ever wreck it I will be buying another. I paid £150 for the full suit last year so I am sure it is much cheaper now. You never know, if you get it cheap enough you may even be able to wangle another present!

P.S. The pants are bib and brace so they can be worn without the jacket in mild condition to keep warm but also avoid getting you trousers wet and suffering from that. I used them a lot when pole fishing to allow me to hold my net + fish on my knee for unhooking.

There is one Here that is much cheaper than what I paid when they were new out. And you dont actually look as much of a tool as the guy in the photo :D

The problem with Barbour jackets and I have owned a few is that they are not particularly warm and they get really stiff when cold. On the various AN fish-ins I've attended quite a few of us have the Pro-Logic Max 4 Thermo jacket, it's waterproof breathable and has a zip in quilted fleece so it is really warm, too warm at times. It falls within your £100 price range see here: http://www.tackle2u.com/prods/297.html

The only problem all be it a minor one it is only available in camo.

I have had and still use Barbour jackets, they are not warm even with the liners.

I asked on Anglers Net a while ago as to what was warm and was told get a Sundridge so I bought a Sundridge Slik MkII but I have had to buy a second suit It was too hot to wear I think it will be great once we get proper cold weather but I thought I was going to melt. I understand their Artic is even warmer.... b****y hell...how hot do you want to be?

So I have bought a Wychwood Solace maximiser and wychwood solace field boots its fine and not too hot when I leave the fleece off and totally waterproof I cant praise it enough. It was like fishing indoors warm as toast and completely dry.

I have fished in ex military suits and found them to be either warm or dry not found one to be both...but that's just my opinion.

I still use my Barbour and find it warm enough with inside layers but it does get stiff on cold wet days. It also seems to absorb water and get heavier but none gets through so I don’t know what’s going on there. Won’t get one for £100 though.

This weekend will be colder so I’ll try out the Argos romper suit which, by all accounts, will keep me warm but may not be up to scrambling through brambles.

In short I think I need a new jacket too so I’ll keep an eye on this thread.

It's never a 'six', let's put it back

I do tend to do a lot of 'bramble' fishing, so my idea might be a bit biased and I'm not a phased with the cold as some. Cold is something you just accept up here. We get maybe 2 months of warm weather per year and the rest is just a sort of numb sensation. Also, there isn't a bit of fishing clothing I have that doesn't have tears or pulls somewhere but that's the problem with fishing in Scotland. If you aren't climbing through shrubbery, you can be sure there's a barbed wire fence to negotiate.

I'm sure these suits are good but I'd go bonkers tearing one. Like Teme, I usually tend to wear as many mixed layers of old clothing as possible and maybe finish it off with some waterproofs. Cheap, probably none to cheerful but I'm not going to weep if any damage is done.

The green baby gro is great for keeping warm, but you do need to be careful around brambles and barbed wire fences. I'll be safely zipped up inside mine at the weekend :)

Very sound advice for those fishing the wilder places and it's an area us Southerners so often overlook, well I do because although mainly a river man my fishing area's are very easily accessible. Just a thought Andy - thermal long johns - undersuit. Norwegian, German, Russian, Swedish,Swiss, Austrian ex- military in rip stop gore tex.
