Snow depth?

Recommended Posts

Just been out for the first time since before the snow. It's deeper out the front of the house and I measured 10ins on the roof of the car. At the same time it was down to 7ins at the back due to the settling that Leon pointed out. So we probably had a peak of 11 1/2" or so.

The main country roads are clear but I saw only 4x4s on the minor lanes. Luckily I've a Subaru Outback complete with all-terrain tyres and so locked in 2nd gear that gives me permanent 4WD I had no problem. However just at the end of our lane there's a car in the ditch.

I'd like to have seen a 2WD get down the unmade-up track to our house! I'm not surprised we've had no post this week!

The tyres make a hell of a difference - provided ground clearance isn't an issue, I think a two wheel drive car on winter tyres is likely to be more capable than a four wheel drive on summer tyres. Our Subaru has four wheel drive and an all season mud and snow / alpine snowflake marked tyre, and has been excellent. It just shrugs its shoulders and drives over it. The wife was saying that she just drove up a hill on the way to work where the traffic in front of her had all given up and turned round :D

Had to drive the Elise in it yesterday, down some local roads which hadn't been gritted or cleared. Slightest touch of throttle in the corners and the back end was out. It was... interesting!

Have you ever seen 6 foot of snow chesters? Have you ever opened your front door in the morning and had an avalanche of powder invade your house?

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

in 1963 yes ,the snow wasnt powder though it had set hard.

i'm sure turning up the heating would get rid of the powder or a nice hoover.

my dad thought of digging through it (being 10 a great idea for me) until he realised the snow actually shouldnt be there ,a huge bit had fallen off the roof brought the gutters down and smashed the glass roof of a lean to (now called conservatories i expect) with the falling snow as well it was up to the bottom of the upstairs windows ,he dug to the outside bog and that was as far as he would go via the side door ,learning his lesson in the summer he removed the side wall of the bog letting us get to it via the pantry

my remark was tongue in cheek as there were no clues to the scale of the distances between the numbers ,seems someone got out the wrong side of a drift this morning :P

as for 6ft of snow its just snow and when it isnt its water and when it isnt its vapour in your front hall, not that bad compared to hanging or dying trapped by your feet in a car fire ,come the summer your snow will be gone

A measured 5ins near Wingham in East Kent and it's still snowing.

We left London just in time having watched the radar map this morning.

However we got back to find our central heating has broken down! As we've a combi boiler and a shower that runs off it we've no hot water either.:cold:

Anyone know what it's like in Swindon, where my daughter lives. Her baby is 11 days overdue so I hope she doesn't have to get to the hospital in a hurry!
