Polly:

remember one of the teams managing to creep into a zoo after dark and catching a pirahna.

That particular team was the late Ian Gillespie, and Jim Gibbinson, still posting here (and perhaps too modest to 'fess up :o )

I can still hear Ian's whisper "Well, that was very quietly done Jim - you are now looking at the British (Rod Caught) Record piranha."

Ian's untimely death was a sad loss to the angling world.

Hey Budgie.. "Hooked" was a great laugh, but all for the wrong reasons.. the Irish presenter who kept getting names wrong, and fluffing his cues.. I think I can even still remember the result!!

"In reverse order:

Third- Otto Wessel;

Second- Sid Meads;

First- Jan van Schendel.."

Or was it the other way round? Oh, how we laughed.. :D

David C:

I seem to remember Gareth Edwards, the welsh rugby player was in the fishing race as well.

Terry Eustace was also a regular (both series), but I think he was a bit embarrassed about it...

The Beeb are antis in disguise and the commercials (no pun intended) will only put on reality TV shows or soaps.

All the aforementioned were involved in the series (two series of 6 programmes each; on BBC2).

The first series was filmed in the UK; the second in Sweden.

Most of the fishing was hard work and deadly serious, but there were a couple of lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek elements (eg the UK record piranha!)

Highlight for me was fly-fishing for wild brown trout and grayling on a drop-dead gorgeous, powerful river in Lapland. Wonderful. Best of all, while in Lapland (200 miles north of the arctic circle) we saw the aurora borealis (northern lights) - an absolutely mind-numbing, wonderful experience.

It was back in the 70's; can't remember the precise date.

Sadly, neither Ian Gillespie or John Darling are still with us - Ian died of a heart attack a year or two after the second series was made; John died of cancer last year. Both were personal friends.
