worm tip

when fishing worms at venues with soft silty bottoms (ie canals) carry a small syringe and inject air into the worm a few times to stop the worm sinking into the silt,(a bit barbaric i know) but it works a treat.

Just had a thought. Anyone ever tried doing the injecting with oil rather than air? I know that oil is light enough to float on it's own but not sure if it would float a worm. If so, should certainly allow you to add that "special something" to call in the fish.

I find it a lot easier to just to chop the worm, they dont dig themselves in then. Cos they don't know which way to go and how do you know, how far off bottom they are, and don't they move in any flow, even still waters move. Not to knock your idea but I think my way is better.

I once tried injecting with mackerel oil, didn't work, the oil was too thick to come out of the hyperdermic.

Eeeeeee older I get the better I was.

I expect to pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness I can show to any fellow - creature, let me do it now, let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.

hi nugg;i get what you are saying but i dont know if you are quite right, the silt in canals is very fine,so fine in fact that even a dead maggot can sink straight down,i know this because i actualy own a quarter mile of canal myself and ive done a bit of checking, what do you think of this?i built a platform 6'x6'from `2by2s to sit just on top of the silt covered it with very fine mesh and had great results. theres a crazy idea, a portable folding aluminum platform with fine plastic mesh and a light cord for retrieval.

Hereford_angler:

I have used foam on the hook to pop worms up. At the moment im getting the numbers of red worm in the compost heap up. Im gonna have plenty of bait during this winter! :)

I was using wee foam balls yesterday. Works very well BUT, would the foam not put the fish off the bait?

I haven't found it so myself, but then I don't often fish pressured venues, especially ones where worms are used a lot.

However you may need a bigger hook. The foam will counterbalance the extra weight, so don't be scared of using anything up to a size 6 for a whole lobworm. Last time I did so I had 6 roach including one under a pound.

In fact, in my experience one of the biggest reasons for missing bites or dropping fish when using lobs is that the hook is too small and so can't be driven home.
