Monkey Man

I can't stop playing this tune at the moment:

I've always liked The Specials, but never really been a proper fan. I kind of picked a few records and skipped the rest.

However, in an insomniac state the other night, I watched a complete set from 1979 on BBC4. It was part of the 'Rock Goes To College' series and was filmed at the Colchester Institute, a place where some of the best academic minds in the world have studied (i.e. me :D).

I'd love to get hold of the Rock Goes To College series on DVD, if it's available. Another awesome gig on there was AC/DC at Essex University....a place where some of the world's worst drunkards have woken up at 6am in the bogs, staggered home and then gone straight to work (i.e. err, me again :D).

Even though nobody here shares my love of the Man that is Monkey, I'm going to bore you with another clip of it. This is the actual one I was watching the other night, which was recorded in the UK's world's greatest town, Colchester:

I'm glad I found it as, just before I did, I'd stumbled across Skanky Winehouse's version. Monkey Man? No, Amy, monkey-spank!

Great band but the most underrated second wave ska band out there still has to be Bad Maners. Forget the silly singles and have alisten to "This is ska."

The third wave of Ska from the US is the 90's and 00's also has some gems. Check out this:

Bad Manners were/are a band and a half. I've got some of their vinyl records here.

America does throw up the odd gem, but I find that most of the bands just don't seem to 'get it', so you have to sift through a lot. i.e. you'll be told a band is 'punk', but they're so far detached from UK punk, it's unreal.

That one was catchy.

It's OK Elton, I've corrected your typo, no need to thank me

Not so sure about the specials, or bad manners, liked some stuff, disliked most though.

Rob.

You B'stard Murphy

You've got me at it now

I love all that old two tone stuff and Ska music sort of my era

been on you Tube for ages listening to Peter Gabriel, Jethro Tull, Genesis (early stuff) The Specials and a favourite of mine the Selector

Watching the old tapes of The Selector you can't keep your eyes away from the lead singer (female in case anyone's wondering) well you would would'nt you if you were still 18 and single,it'd be rude not to

I was watching some old programmes about reggae on BBC4 the other night, and she was interviewed a fair bit :)

Pauline was a guest on Radio 2 a couple of weeks ago (Radcliffe & Maconie) and it just might still be available on the i-Player.

She, with The Selecter, are playing at Birmingham town hall on the 18th November along with The Beat should make for a good concert.

both bands (along with a lot of the old punk bands) seem to quite regularly play at the robin hood 2 in bilston.
