Hooklenghths

If on a pole or carp rig I check the line, knots and hook for damage, bluntness etc, if I am happy with them I will put the rig back on the winder.

As pole rigs dont get stretched due to the elastic taking the strain and most of my carp rigs are made with 12lb plus braid I know they have not been weakend due to stretching.

I always put any hook lengths and hooks used for waggler or general ledgering in the bin when I get home as I know the hooklength would have been stretched and weakend.

Hi Zappagod, I'm a bit puritanical about this, I never reuse a hooklength. To go even further, I replace my reel line every 3 or 4 trips, I have been known to strip my reel after one session if fishing snaggy swims (or after a particularly good session).

My view is that the line connects you to the fish and is generally the weakest link, buying line on bulk spools means that replacing a spool costs pennies - we pay a fortune on bait, travel, permits etc, why skimp on line when it could cost a fish of a lifetime?

Peter.

yep me too, I never re-use a hook length, just clip off the swivel and hook, sharpen the hook, and tie it all back up.

I change when its looking tired .. but at the end of a session I always bin it but SAFTLY not thrown away on the bank !!

In a 6 hour session I will change it about 4 times.

If I'm bagging up I will change the hook every dozen or so fish (it is surprising how quickly the point becomes blunt), changing the entire hooklength before it becomes too short. At the end of the session though, both hook and hooklength are binned whether I've caught anything on it or not.

Braid man myself and I use the rig until the hook no longer feels as sharp as when new. So depending on conditions, somewhere between a new rig after each fish or two and a new rig every second or third trip.

That being said, I quit sharpening single hooks when the chemical points got so good. I'll still touch up the trebles on a lure but not a single hook tied to a rig.

I tend to change mine after a couple of sessions, but unless there's any sign of wear I don't change it after I've caught a few fish. If I keep on catching, as long as the hook is still sharp & I'm not losing fish, I just carry on with the same rig.
