Fishing Weather? Not!!!

Don't think I'll try any fishing Wednesday. Weather prediction is as follows for my area (and 32ºF is freezing)

quote:

Wednesday

Sleet or snow through late morning...then freezing rain...sleet...or snow in the afternoon. Accumulation 1 to 2 inches. Highs in the lower 30s. Northeast winds around 15 mph. Chance of precipitation near 100 percent.

Wednesday Night

Freezing rain...rain...or freezing drizzle. Damaging ice accumulation likely. Lows in the upper 20s. Northeast winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation near 100 percent.

As of right this moment we are blessed with a dome of cold, dry air sent to us by the folks up north (Canada to be exact). Around midnight, we expect a mass of warm, wet air from the Gulf of Mexico to arrive. Warm is lighter so it will slide up over the dry stuff and at some point decide to donate some of the moisture. Which will freeze on the way down. Brrrrr & Yuck.

We've got a cold snap forecast for the weekend. Chilly air arriving from Siberia - I'm actaully quite looking forward to it! - make a change from all the wind and rain over the past 6 weeks!!!

Freezing rain is rare in the UK I'm pleased to say, but just as dangerous of course. In fact probably more so as most Brits won't have experienced it and so will get caught out.

Well - as predicted, perfect weather for freezing rain. Surface temperature is around 4ºF below freezing so all the surfaces will freeze. Air up high is s smidgen above freezing. So, the rain falls and then sticks & turns to ice.

Trees now have limbs getting real heavy with ice. Power lines are iceing as well. Roads are OK just now since the county has been spreading sand since the precip started but should get seriously slick late tonight.

They just closed us down at work so folks could drive home before the roads ice up. Anybody with good sense has a non-electric means of heating ready to go since we will likely start to lose power lines in the next hour or two or three.

Told the wife I was thinking of taking advantage of no work to head out fishing. Interesting reaction from her. And I ain't fishing as you will notice. LOL

I remember seeing a TV programme about freezing rain, and the effect of all that ice was shown on power lines, trees, buildings, ships etc. Awesome!

I hope it doesn't last very long or cause much chaos for you, Newt.

Norma and I thought to escape the bad weather by heading out for Mauritius.

Even there we found our first three fishing trips were cancelled due to a cyclone approaching the island

However, we did get out eventually - will do a report on Mauritius for the sea thread after the weekend (a sea trip in the Channel is booked for tomorrow - what are the odds against cancellation?)

Well - storm has passed. Somewhere around 650,000 folks in this area without power and may be a day or two getting it back.

Lots of trees down, lots of limbs down, lots of power lines and power poles down. All from the weight of ice which clung in really awesome amounts.

Just glad there wasn't wind along with the other else it would be lots worse. Even as it is, more damage than the last large hurricane caused us.

Weather site posted the following:

quote:

Although the devastating ice storm has ended across the Carolinas and northeast Georgia... danger will continue this afternoon. As the melting process begins... huge chunks of ice will fall from trees and power lines. Some trees and limbs may continue to fall as well.

Numerous power lines have been downed... and it is possible some could still be active. You should stay away from downed or low hanging lines.

To give you an idea - my house was out of the path of the worst of the icing by a mile or two. Very lucky. And here is a shot I took this morning of the yard next door.
