Rod Licence by Direct Debit

They did a similar thing on the Grand Union Canal. My mum's back garden backs onto the canal and I have fished there since I was a little boy (from my back garden!!).

There used to be some wonderful overhanging trees just along from there and it was a haven for fish, especially carp. You used to be able to throw bread under the trees and see three or four mouths appear immediately, and you could do this all the way along the bank.

Then the trees were "tidied away" for the sake of the barges!!??!! Those barges had never had a problem getting through before, so why clear them? These days the bank is barren, and all the fish have disappeared somewhere else.

It certainly is time that licences were available more easily. Once they have taken your money, their 'duty of care' begins, so the important factor is to ensure that your bank has passed the money into their grubby little hands.

I'm no fan of The Environment Agency - one May Day Monday, one day after I had returned from working abroad, it was a beautiful day and I wanted to go fishing, but I had no licence for that year, AND NO MEANS OF GETTING ONE. Oh well, I thought they will be reasonable. Anyway I went to my mates fishery, a private lake in the middle of nowhere in rural West Wales. Guess what! The bailiff came. I explained my situation and produced the previous three years rod licences (that is how long the national scheme had been going at that time). He understood perfectly and reported me. I got my solicitor to write to The Environment Agency, and provided absolute proof that I had not been in a position to purchase a licence prior to that date, I also produced dozens of water authority licences from previous years (to prove that I didn't dodge my responsibility). They prosecuted me. They had six months to issue the summons, they took five months and twenty six days. I went to court with all of my evidence and I got fined ten pounds. I wonder how much that prosecution cost? So go on Mr Environment Agency, you carry on spending our licence money wisely, and I'll carry on with my CRIMINAL RECORD. Yes, it is a CRIMINAL offence to fish without a licence, but apparently not to drive a car without one.

Just received this by email:

Dont pay by direct debit for licence as it takes big business away from small post offices trying to survive.

My wife and I run a sub post office and I am also a keen angler. We are paid per transaction over the counter.

Please help us to get people to use the post offices.

Yours hopefully,

Ian & Sarah

The full licence is £61 by direct debit, is this the same price as you pay at the post office.

As to taking business away from the post offices, I agree that they need support, however i must add that none of them were backing the tackle shops when they were no longer able to sell the licences.

I saw the note from the post office guy above . . it would be nice to know in the 1st year exactly what training they got.

I was really really unimpressed with the whole fiasco in the Bradford Area . .

It took me 3 post offices to get the licences.

number one wanted ID - god only knows why

number two would not let me renew for father and brother in law and said each person had to attend in person

number three didn't have a clue what to do and passed the book to me to fill out all three, whilst he server other customers

now theres consistency

and all within 1 square mile . . . however . . I guess I will go back to number three this year for is

hey waddaya know I can spell tomato !
