OK, why would you want to line the pockets of the tackle trade for a poor imitation of something (weed and rocks) you can have for free easily and a better match?

 

p.s. IMO what ever you do to your rig, it wont have as good an effect as fishing after dark or when there is some colour in the water.

My biggest so far has been an accidental 4lb 8oz but apparently they go bigger so I'm going t have to try. What bait do you use with lot rigs for eels? Maggots?

You fish a lob worm on a bolt rig? Is that what you fished with at the fish in? I was planning in sitting out all night on a warmer summer night but if I can find a lot rig which will catch eels it would be even better!

Yeah, I used bolt rigs with Lobs at the Fish-In and most of the eels came to that tactic. I did catch a few on a running feeder rig but I have found that short bolt rigs reduce the chances of deep hooking.

Do you need to hook the worm in a specific position or would just through one end with a red fake maggot to keep it in the hook work? I always assumed it would work very well due to the lack or guarantee of the hook being in the mouth before the eel moved off. Obviously it works though, I'm just slightly confused why at the moment :-)

A lot of people get confused over this high breaking strain carp hook length material lark! A lot of these materials are chosen for other properties they have such as suppleness or stiffness the actual breaking strain just being what they happen to be rather that a reason for selection. Its because of this that carpers have had to rethink a lot of their rigs. Breaking the "Golden Rule" of having a lower BS hook link than mainline means they have had to develop rigs that will shed the hook and hoolink in the case of a break above it.The whole "Safe Rig" culture we now see is basically down to this (just wish a lot more of them knew/realised this so would then stop telling non carp anglers how it should be done!)

 

Regarding eels Dales is quite right about the move towards "self hooking" short hook link/bolt rig style rigs to avoid deep hooking.When I mentioned this to a new poster recently I didn't know of any decent online info on this but recently got directed to this-

I'm a bit more set in my ways (although intend to try the set up shown at some point this season) But I will submit my Wingham Fish In report tomorrow if I get time and explain how I do it still.

I remember Miroku made a rig for eels using a short wire hooklength with a large single hook. I'm gonna ask him to see if he has any left and maybe get a pic of one. He used them at Wingham with a bunch of worms and every eel was perfectly hooked in the lip !! Removing the hook was so easy by using a pair of pliers to grip the hook while the fish was raised off the ground and simply turning the hook letting the eel just drop back into the water....it was a brilliant little set up.

At the Fish-In I used much bigger baits then I would normaly use based on the assumption that the eels were much bigger then the ones I normaly encounter and so I used 3 or 4 big lobs. They were ordered from Steve and so if you ordered some you will kind of know the size. I hooked them either tail or head end with most of the worm hanging loose. The idea being that the wiggling would send out plenty of distress signals and vibration. I also cut the end of one of the worms to leak out attraction and injected one worm with a little air to pop it up slightly just to ensure the whole bunch did not bury themselves.

 

Also on a bolt rig I was hoping that the free end of the worms would sit furthest away from the lead and so if an eel picked the bait up and started to swallow it the last end to enter the mouth would be the hook end and any movement would hopefully result in a clean hook up in the lips.

 

I have tried similar on the coarse lake but with less success as I seem to get plenty of runs but less hook ups as I assume smaller eels are striping the baits of the hook. With the smaller eels I tend to use Dendras and thread the hook through as much as the eel as possable.

At times it can be a little tricky to try to fish with Lobs but they are a great bait for the Big Perch. If it's not the small eels, it's the small Perch and if they both stay away you have the Jacks
