Hook Lengths?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I was wondering what's peoples thoughts are regarding using coated braid hook lengths, specifically without a high breaking strength mainline. The problem I have is that coated braid only seems to start at 15lb breaking strain and my normal mainline in 12lb mono and I want to use a coated braid as a hook lengths for a few reasons. I was always brought up when I was younger to fish with a lower strenght hook length than mainline which in this situation wouldn't be the case, but on the other hand if I was to pick the braid based on the diameter of it than the braid is probably less thick than the mono. Should I just bite the bullet and go up to a higher breaking strain mainline (I really don't want to do this) or just do what seems to be the fashion now and use a higher breaking strain hook length than mainline and convince myself the old theory that mainline should be greater than the hook length doesn't apply with braid hook lengths (I'm not sure by this...)

Cheers

Its a dillema, but remember even the best knot will weaken the rig so 12 mainline to 15 braid I wouldn't worry too much with. I guess you a thinking barbel or carp here, and for me and my barbel exploits I am thinking like you of trying to improve my hook length presentation. I have been using mono and flouro to a lesser extent, but the limpness of braid I think will help.

I went to a barbel society meeting last week B) and the speaker demonstrated a new hook length material that looked just like weed / debris. It was very clever and was made from braid. It is distributed by Solar Tackle, and retails a £3.95 but it's about a metre long and the design allows you to change your hook and weight quickly. Fished with a Stonz or similar I reckon the jobs a good 'un ;) So if your looking at braid for the same reason as me hope this helps, if not, well the cats out of the bag :D

I think you've been had hook line and sinker by the tackle trade.

Hi,

Yes it's for Carp at the moment although maybe tench in the future. The coated braid is for two reason, the first I found the coated section pushed away from the lead and straightened out more than the 10lb fluro I was using (the straigter the hook link the quicker the hook will turn with a bolt rig) and also it will allow me to have the last inch stripped for a more natrual presentation. Also I will be using it for popped up fake corn and I think this is better and easier than tying a combi rig to get the popped up part to act natrual. At the moment it's just for semi fixed bolt rigs although the eels in the lake I'm fishing go to over 6lb and the temptation to fish for them one night is tempting so I'll have to think of a new hook length for a running/worm rig.

Cheers

From a lot of the stuff I have read about eels the running rig does look the obvious answer for eel fishing, But a few AN members put me on to the idea of short hook lengths on bolt rigs, it drastically improves the chances of eels getting hooked in the lip and not swallowing the hook. I have been surprised by how many get hooked in the lower lip using this tactic. Further searches on eel fishing has turned up that this is a tactic a number of eel guys use.

The running rig is a great method for them but I tend to only use it while sitting on my rods. If I think I will be wondering around the swim or it's late and I might be in the bivy then I opt for the short bolt rig tied with quicksilver.

I can't imagine what a 6 pounder would look like and the fight would be awesome :D If you do get one or even a good one smaller then that you will have to post some pics and story. Just hope your self take photography is better mine. It just does not go well with eel fishing

Hi Errrm,

Check out the Sufix range of coated braids. A few of them come in 10lb.

I currently use the Sheath Skin in 10lb and Black Silt also in 10lb.

I use these for all my Tench, Bream and small water carp fishing and they have performed perfectly.

They're currently half price too ;)

My biggest so far has been an accidental 4lb 8oz but apparently they go bigger so I'm going t have to try. What bait do you use with lot rigs for eels? Maggots?

Ordered some to try:-). Cheers.

I'm still interested in the logic people now use with higher breaking strain hook lengths if anyone has a view on them?

you could always try an Ann Robinson if you want your end tackle to break before the mainline, just put a weaker line between the mainline and braid.

Mainline ----> Weakest Link ----> Braid Hooklength

I would just tie a combi rig if I was going to do this as I think the presentation would be better I think.
